Religulous

lol - actually, i didn't want to buy the targa, and i certainly did not want to spend that much.  it was just the ONLY car that does what i need a car to do.    there is not another 2+2 with a removable roof that has the performance of that car, and all of the modern conveniences.

but, i agree in as much as whatever makes you feel good, you should pursue.  i said essentially that above, related to endorphins.  some people read harry potter because it makes them feel good.  some read the bible.  both provide escapes from one's reality by telling you a story that seems better than your life.  even i enjoy a good story now and then.

Mother Teresa is now a " Saint ". And not to diminish anything from the admirable work she has done for the ill and the poverty-stricken , but here's the essence of the sainthood " PR " campaign the church runs ....

Interesting it was in the Salt Lake Tribune, the local paper for another religion that devolved to Warren Jeffs.

Believe it or not, I stay away from discussing either / or  at social events, particularly when wine is involved.   That could be  " fuel to the fire "

Actually I find it really sad that these subjects are taboo in a social setting.  I see it all the time, I visit with my closest friends and don't dare talk about anything that might be contrary to their beliefs, because then my statement or observation might be a "micro-aggression".  Of course offering an opinion (as opposed to facts) is just a provocation for an argument.  And only rarely can we get a question in response to an opinion, but instead it is always "hit 'em hard" with some contrary view.  Usually the contrary view is a direct personal attack suggesting something is wrong with me.

For millennia families, friends, and communities would talk both of these subjects around the table, at the pub, or wherever.  Now I can never learn anything from my closest friends, family, and associates.   Therefore, sadly for all of us, our sources of understanding are now primarily "for profit" media companies, and they never tell the whole story, and it is always skewed to someone's agenda.  Even worse it is always a one-way flow of information, there is no way to learn anything through discussion with the broadcast / Internet media companies.  Welcome to the modern world, advertising (MONEY) is more important than any of our cherished values such as having a conversation.

True . Even friends and families differing opinions about sports teams ( talk about an insignificant impact on anyone’s life ) have occasionally ended in serious relationship erosion, so politics and religion discussions in a circle of friends or family always has a chance at unwanted friction ..but the social media having pretty much taken over personal interaction, appears to be the new way of expressing one’s views in a relatively “ safe space “ . Man I’m getting old, I had a really hard time saying “ safe space “ without rolling my eyes and smirking ..

One wonders if the inability to have political or religious discussions with friends might indicate they aren’t really friends but rather acquaintances. Safe space is code for suppression of free speech. Safe space should be prison.

One of the most memorable lines of comedian Yakov Smirnoff was :

Here in America you have freedom of speech . In Russia we also have freedom of speech . The only difference is that in America you still have freedom after you speak. Funny at the time, but no longer humorous for maybe at least the last twenty years , and particularly an untrue statement now. Although there may have always been some potential consequence to ones speech ( offending a few people or groups, it pretty much stopped there..) the severity of those consequences now has completely invalidated the myth that there is a first amendment . And the bar has been set so high for essentially anything you might say that even entirely out of context or incorrect interpretations by others can get you fired, barred from who knows what, sued, or even imprisoned ..

Free speech .. Ha, dont make me laugh . Wait, am I offending any snowflakes by laughter ?

I remember telling my youngest daughter to keep her opinions to herself in college. Don’t argue with your teacher or tell them your opinion. She was at first resistant but quickly saw what happened to those who spoke their mind. Perhaps this is where all balanced intelligent people should be petrified. Education no longer allows for the free discourse of opinion. It is merely progressive liberal rant with punitive measures for non compliance. Glad I got me an edeecation way back. Course then their was still a liberal rant, burning Nixon in effigy, but one could discourse.
