Bilstein inserts confusion
#1

Now looking at Bilstein front strut inserts, the catalog specifies a specific part number for 968 (34001042) but most vendors recommend the 944 compatible part (34000403). There is a price difference between the two units.

Anybody knows what's the difference between those?

Sorry I cannot help , and judging by the number of views but no responses there seems little info.  I put on Koni inserts a year or so back which required a bit of angle grinder work, but all in all was pretty straight forward.  If you cannot get the info you need and hence are not comfortable with the project, you might consider Koni instead.  I seem to remember the instructions are here on the forum.

Edit ..... it looks like I was the last to post on the thread in 2020 (doesn't time fly??), it goes under the imaginative name of "Front Struts" ... just search for Koni from the top of forums and you'll find it.

You'll also see commentary about Koni vs Bilstein .... my thanks to Jack, MCL, and others for that thread, really supportive!

Good luck

I may have a partial answer in the compression rebound values. Per Bilstein:

944 shock 1470/945

968 shock 1480/1125

So both units behave approx the same on rebound, but 968 shock is firmer on compression. Of course both are B6 sports, I can't find any other difference, certainly nothing that could explain the price difference. Same quality, different valving.

Supply/demand.

When I first looked, I assumed it was the difference between the insert only that require cutting the pressed inserts out of the old struts, but both these are just the inserts.

I was hoping someone with definite info would weigh in since I don’t remember the details but IIRC, Sachs struts needed the “hacksaw mod” in order to use the inserts. Before I realized the slight price difference, I assumed it was that. But I noticed that both saw “for use on cars originally equipped with Boge struts.”  FWIW, I don’t know if any 968s had Sachs. Maybe it was a 944 thing.

When I replaced mine with the OEM Boge in 2017, they came complete.

I just put new struts and rear coil overs on. The coil overs on the reverse lifted the rear end back to where it should be and I think the struts were oem - I ordered it all through Sunset in Oregon.

The only snag I had was waiting for over a year until the new company got the front strut mounts made again per porsche specs after the original maker went belly up.

I am really happy. It got rid of all the steering wheel shake I was experiencing after hitting a bump and it handles better than ever. I didn't want to have to try to spend all the time modifying struts to fit as there isn't any direct replacement in Bilstiens I am aware of.

Wasn't cheap, but it's done.

I put these under mine , few years ago , very happy with them , adjustable all the way  , put the car at cs riding height (mainly for the looks )

Inox easy to keep nice and clean .

And still a  surprisingly smooth ride , was not looking for a racer , but a good sporty driver .
