Oh, come on... that actually makes the news consistently ; the " store owner shoots would-be robber " , or " man shoots home intruder " makes National news headlines every single time something like that does happen, which is rare; there may be barely a handful of those each year. Hardly coming out on the positive side of things <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.png" class="smilie" alt="" />



Jay, I never professed penalties for legal possession of " WEAPONS" per se, I simply suggested that possession of easily concealable stuff like handguns, or at the other end of the spectrum assault / military armament have no place in any society, IMO. Sure, none of that will prevent another "Aurora" from happening, but it may prevent thousands of other people getting killed with such ease every day as they are now. And if anyone says criminals will plunge a knife into a person if they don't have a gun, which I have heard someone mention on a talk show, well that's about as an absurd of a statement one can make. BTW, the comment re Ted Turner led me to think of Ted Nugent and I thought : hey, wait a minute here.. we should jail everyone named "Ted" right now, that's obviously the common denominator for gun extremists <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

forgot to concede that statistics are really subject to interpretation..I remember an ad campaign by MADD where they emphatically underscored the fact that 30% of all automobile accident fatalities are caused by drunk drivers. so my first thought was, that clearly translates to the fact that 70% of accident fatalities are caused by sober drivers ! so would,t one have a far better chance of surviving an accident if everyone was driving drunk ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I'm just sayin'.. it's all on how you interpret what's published out there and how it's framed <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Its kinda the same point with the drug war. Banning them doesnt keep people from doing them. Just like banning guns wont keep tragedies like this from happening.

Sorry to disagree ds968, but there are countless instances where people are saved by legally owned firearms, and it never makes the news, and certainly not at the national level.



Pick up a copy of American Rifleman and you'll find a half-dozen of these cases or more every month, and that's only highlights in a given month. I'm afraid it's a bit of "out of sight, out of mind"...



Case in point, on July 17th, a boy was saved from a pit bull attack by a citizen with a firearm. The boy is recovering from the bites and the dog was later euthanized (the dog was not killed during-, only deterred from- the attack). But a few years ago, a two-year-old boy was attacked here locally by a pit bull which ate most of his buttocks and colon, and the boy lived a few agonizing weeks before dying.



If that were your child and I was a passerby, would you want me to be armed and trained in the use of a firearm?

YES. my kid, or anyone else's kid, or a potential rape victim, etc.. and as I said, I own a rifle myself ( and am well trained in its use ) yet I'm revolted at the thought of availibility of handguns which make it sooo convenient and easy for everyone and anyone to kill

oh well, no right or wrong answers really..
