Are you doing it by hand?

Manual. Faster to do on a nice day when you pull up to a stop light.

I really like the way the car looks with the top up but i hate the damned thing. It rattles and is essentially sound transparent. And a pain to open and close with the boot cover etc as bob suggests. I drive routinely with it down and only put it up to protect the inside from sun and dirt and bird shit when its parked at work outside. I need a new top but it seems pointless since i just use it as a seat cover. But every once in a while i need ti drive with it down so ill be getting it replaced in a couple of weeks. Glad do you have a recommendation for replacement?

i am much happier with the top i have now, than the top i previously had, which was original.  this one is much quieter, and has a zip out rear window.  not cheap, but better.

as for standard tops, stay away from the stayfast tops.  they don't hold up.  GAHH is the current top of choice, followed by robbins.  robbins used to be the best, but since the company made some changes, they no longer are.

i would not try to do this yourself.  even i won't mess with this top, and i've done a lot of them on other cars.

I'm just sad our cars weren't around long enough for either Porsche or some aftermarket company to market a fiberglass hard top. IMO, the only thing that recommends a Boxster over a 968. If there was one, I'd probably take the soft top off and chuck it. Mine broke after I was confused and pushed the "down button" with it down and sheared the gears or something. No biggy. I'd guess of the 25K "manual" miles I've put on my car, fewer than 1,000 have been with the top up.
