while it makes me crazy to think of this actually happening, i get it - i have a black car, and it definitely takes more energy to cool off than any of our others

No quarrels with that, Flash. But where will it stop? Will they some day tell you what color to paint your house? Require you to wear Body Armor underwear? Add a limiter to control your minimum A/C setting?
Tom
lol - they already do tell me what color i can paint my house, when i can water my lawn, what i can plant................
Careful Joe. Some day you may be required to own nothing but white cars. Once you go white you can never go back.
Tom
Bring it on. I'll find a way.

ok, that explains all the " hot air " , it's actually eminating from your car !
sorry, could not resist ( damn, I know I'm going to pay for this at Paso somehow.. )
I've driven extensively with radar/laser detectors and laser shifters (jammers). I actually participate more on radarbusters.com forums than I do here, and I would suggest anyone interested in effective countermeasures check out that site (so I won't go too deep into the BS about that stuff here).
In the 968, I have an Escort 8500 (blue LED) and a pair of ZR3 shifters up front, but haven't bothered installing a shifter on the rear license plate. It works very well, giving me just enough time to stomp on the brakes when LEO hits me with the laser. I've always been able to slow down before their laser "punches through" and gets an accurate reading. I've lost count of how many times I thought I was about to get a ticket as a highway patrol car or motorcycle lights up the flashers and pursues me...only to pull over a car next to me.
The laser jammers seem to be more effective when a car has a bra on the front end.
As for radar, a good detector gives you such a huge advantage. Still, a driver has to be constantly watching ahead - have good "situational awareness" - as you never know when a LEO will be hididng, merge onto the highway behind you, etc. I absolutely hate traffic enforcement of this kind, as it's more a cash register function of a police agency than genuine peace-keeping. All kinds of real crimes happening elsewhere...
After reading Radarbusters I purchased the Escort SR7 with shifters.

Been doing some research on all of this as well. Now I get bandit's mention here. Not sure if it is lore or real, but I read reports that black cars are harder to lidar because they absorb light energy from the laser gun. I thought initially that they had gone wacko completely. Going to save the world by imposing color restrictions on car buyers. Now I see that the real reason would be that the lovely state would lose ticket revenue...
I am getting ready to buy something that may help with the lidar. Any recommendations? Shifters, jammers?
i thought i put up the recommendation on this already, but i guess not - there is not a lot out there, but there is a unit that seems to be effective if used correctly - i'll get the link to it and post it - not cheap for sure though
here's the snag - they are illegal in caifornia

so is driving faster than the speed limit
I'm going to write something that I never thought I'd write. I've found the most effective way to avoid speeding tickets - I've stopped speeding! Ever since I started doing DE events, I've slowed down on the road. I now set the cruise control to something less than 5 mph over the speed limit, find that I'm spending much more time in the right lane than I used to, and don't worry at all about reaction time when I spot a radar trap - I just keep doing what I'm doing. The relaxation element is quite surprising - and nice.

guys, it's time for an INTERVENTION ! everyone gather up and let's rush over to his house before it's too late
though I must admit I've been a bit guilty of the same lately.. with a few exceptions here and there I've always maintained a 5 -10 mph diff on city streets , but now I find myself doing that on the highway more often than not, and that's just plain crazy ! may be I need an intervention as well
lol - another visit down here will fix that - you spend so much time at 10mph that when the freeway opens up, everybody is doing 85

You are only too right. Exactly why people still buy Buicks.
Of all of the GM brands that look like potential survivors, Buick is the one I'd never - EVER - own. It's right up (or down) there with a Mercury Grand Marquis!
I think we can keep the Corvette around a few more years.

It is less an issue of slowing down and more an issue of BS traffic enforcement for revenue enhancement purposes... I've never gotten a ticket in any of the Porsches I've owned, but I have been tagged in Volvos, Mazdas, and GMC pickups - most recently in a small town on a state highway in NC where the speed limit goes from 65 to 45 with literally no warning and a cop sitting right there.
And statistics show that traffic enforcement increases in direct proportion with decreases in tax revenue in economic downturns:

You'd be surprised.
Driving home late one night. Tired as hell, actually driving 5 under the limit for once. Sitting at a stop light, an IROC-Z pulls up and revs. I am severely disinterested. He peels off on green anyways, pulling quickly from me. I sat at the light for a good second or two. 1/4-mile down the road, and barely tipping 50 in a 55, the stomach pit-dropping red flashes of red and blue lights startle me. With my radar on and not making a sound, he claims to have clocked me doing 74 in a 55. I ask to see the radar gun, he says it was cleared. I ask about the IROC, he denies seeing it. I tell him my detector didn't go off... yeah, that didn't seem to help any.
His word against mine, so I just paid it. Shoulda just went home a different way.
