actually, you can do something about lasers - there are some very effective devices out there - be prepared to open your wallet though - to get real protection you are looking at about $700 for the laser stuff alone (illegal in california though) - you can probably turn it off once you get the warning and slow down, and the cop will never know, but it is a roll of the dice
the cameras can be "beaten" too - if you have a GPS detector, it will have the locations logged, and alert you before you get to one - also, if it is a radar type camera (as opposed to the road sensor type), the detectors can see those way ahead of time - there are also things you can do with the license plates (though this is illegal in california)
as i said, i am compiling all the information, and distilling it into a report for everybody - i'll have it done in a day or two
Cool. I've just gone to figuring to hell with it - take my license - if you can catch me I still tote the RD, but I figure it is protecting me maybe 70% of the time with all the lasers out there now.
ok, I kid you not about this folks.. I rarely exceed the posted speed limit on city streets.. and if I do it's by no more than 5mph or so only because I don't keep an eye on the speedometer all the time, and just go by feel .. not because I give a crap about the traffic "laws" but because I really care about kids on bikes, or pedestrians, or other cars, etc, etc. However, I rarely drive below 80 mph on freeways and more often than not if traffic is light I WILL go 120, 130, 150, and max out the car on short term runs every so often, so this is a very, very important issue for me. So if anything at all can mitigate the risk of me ending up in jail, $ 700 or $ 1,000 for a device that can help that objective is well worth it
agreed - i have AAA insurance, and a clean record - one ticket though and my rates go up $700 a year for 3 years
then there are the fines and such themselves
that thing would pay for itself the first time it got me out of one - the radar detector has saved me countless times - but i want one in each car, and i also don't want to see a coiled wire in the cigarette lighter - so, i'm going to get a hard wire kit for that one and put it in the M3 - it really doesn't get pushed that hard, or driven often, so i'm not so worried about that one
the porsche is another matter - i fly that thing every time i drive it - but, i never drive in virginia, DC or canada, so i don't need RDD immunity so much, so a GPS unit seems to make more sense
in the denali, i want it completely invisible, as i do drive through virginia an DC - but don't really care about the GPS feature so much, and could sacrifice that (though i did almost get nailed at a red light camera, and will be going through arizona, where they have added a bunch of camera traps) - i may have to run both units in that car
laser jamming is what i am working on sorting out right now - i want that in both the porsche and the denali - unfortunately i may not be able to run it in the porsche - there really isn't a good place for the transmitters to live that would be effective without sacrificing aesthetics
of course i could just have a graphite honeycomb front end made and shoot it with prismatic paint - that would be virtually invisible, but i could buy another car for what that would cost

I'm with you. Easy where the kids are - go fast on the speedway - er - freeway. And I can attest to D's willingness to crank it out. On the fun run last year I was at 120 in very light traffic figuring I would win the high speed award for the day. To my surprise a blue streak whistled by me 2 lanes to the right.
Speaking of radar - I got blasted with Ka on the way home last night. About 82 on the freeway, which is about the speed limit here, so I did not get pulled, but man that got my attention. I am therefore, also most interested kimosabe.
Rxter: I thought HOV was for "High Output Vehicles" Like Porsches.......that's why the lanes are always so empty and you can go so fast!
Interesting idea, however what's the penalty if you're popped with a jamming device - I bet it's fairly hefty. Fortunately, like radar, laser is line of sight, so in some situations laser doesn't work.
+1 on the revenue theory; I'd bet this is especially true with today's cash strapped state government. I'm sure it's widely known that a car capable of 160 with tires rated to 200, is safe at 100; so there's no technical basis for highway speed limits. They're not saving me from anything so in my estimation tickets are purely for state revenue...
while i agree that enforcement is arbitrary and revenue driven, if the drivers had to go through a test to qualify to drive at that speed, i would agree that the cars are safe and we shouldn't be penalized for driving fast - unfortunately when people driving those cars that fast hit somebody, it usually isn't a race driver behind the wheel - it's usually the guy who really belongs in the camry, and they usually hit the mom in the minivan
using a jammer is a misdemeanor, IF they can prove you used it, and consequently is almost never prosecuted - owning one is not illegal
Oh yeah, we've discussed and wished for special licensing for some time now - sadly it'll probably never happen. And, I bet insurance the co's would have another reason to jack rates, even with a special classification.
If a laser coincidently malfunctions when a car that is clearly speeding goes by and you're pulled over, the car inspected, the device is found - I'd bet the court would undoubtedly take the officers word over yours. It's a game of cat & mouse and how much risk one is willing to take...
One idea I consider some time ago [924 days] was using a paint that absorbs or dissipates the laser energy. Although, for it to work the car would also have to include hide-a-way lights, [which the 924 had].
yes, but the part that most people forget is the presumption of innocence - you have to be on top of our game, or hire an attorney, but unless they can prove it, you can beat the charge - most people make the mistake though of testifying, which opens up a different line of questioning
anyway, legal nonsense aside, it is a roll of the proverbial dice
that paint exists - works well too - they even have it for the glass of the lights - however, radar requires an entirely different method, which is ridiculously expensive
Imagine how fun the licensing tests would be. A free autox.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->WoW FlaSH, got a list like this for Ohio???<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I was driving in Ohio a couple weeks ago, radio on, not paying attention to my radar/laser detector screaming, cop in plain site, and despite the jammers/diffusers on my car he got me at 765 ft, 81 in a 75.
Gots ta pay mo motha-***in' attenshun!
reading this article today ( link below ) got my blood boiling. the ONLY thing with which I agree is the zero tolerance for red light runnning and any device meant to catch those violations is fine in my book, but as for the rest ... the proliferation of these overzealous, big brother, draconian, autocratic, government-run-amuk measures designed to do nothing but generate revenue for municipalties with no means of challenges which can be mounted ( with any chance of success, anyway ) by the public is un-f'ing-believable !!

anyone know an attorney with time on their hands and little need for money who might entertain the idea of filing a trillion dollar class action suit against every municipality in this country, if for no other reason but to bring
nation-wide visibility to what is quickly becoming a pandemic... IHMO...
A famous California radar story...
When Willie Brown was speaker of the assembly back in the mid 1980s, each legislator received a travel allowance to use either for airfare or a car. Willie, representing SF, chose a car. Specifically a Porsche 911! Not sure if he contributed money to the deal, but he had a black 911. Some versions of this story say he had a 930, but Porsche did not import the 930 between 79 and 85, so I've always doubted that part.
Each year the CHP would include radar guns in their annual budget request. And each year the speaker, who was known to drive I80 between Sacramento and the Bay Area at triple digits, would line out the request. For this reason the CHP had to rely on pacing and aircraft to catch speeders, which kept them from setting up radar traps with multiple cars. Sometime around 1988 a deal was struck and the CHP finally got radar.
Luckily by this time I had graduated from college and was serving overseas
And now lawmakers in CA want the sale of black cars banned by 2012 because they use to much energy...
Yup.
Glad we's in da South!

April fools right?
HEY! even if they ban driving altogether, it's still not a reason to move out of California ! Nothing is, or can ever be .. That said, the insanity of legislature in this State has reached , nah, make that exceeded, monumental proportions.
God help y'all. This only reinforces why I have no interest in moving back to CA.
