More fun. Took the car in for the scheduled 24,000 km service (car has about 320,000 km now) to have the control arm replaced to deal with a failed ball joint. After the alignment the belt was chirping a bit. So they decided to see if it needed some tightening (it was tightened a bit a while ago). Discovered that one of the bolts holding the A/C compressor was failed and the belt was trying to walk itself right off the pulley. Also discovered a torn rear axle boot. Always good to get next year's projects planned before the current year is over.
Failure of an A/C compressor mounting bolt is, in my personal experience, all too common. I must have had at least three such failures - including one while on the track at Watkins Glen. I've also had an A/C compressor mounting lug fail. You can imagine that I've thought more than once about getting rid of A/C altogether.
So have I. But, when you drive it for long distances at a time and drive it a lot (37,000 km so far this year), roasting my arse doesn't seem all that appealing.
That's exactly why I've thought about it, but haven't done it. Since I purchased a winter car (a 2004 PT Cruiser two years ago), the mileage I'm putting on the 968 has dropped dramatically - but I've still put an annual average of nearly 20,000 miles on it over the six-and-a-half years I've owned it.
Got it back today. One bolt was broken and the other bent. Put on a new belt and all is good now. I also had the gear oil changed out at the same time. What a friggin' difference THAT made. I shifted into second coming from the repair shop lot and thought that something had come off as I went through neutral from first. Wow. The other stuff was only 2 years old.
