Anyone know of a Porsche tool #9288 ("Hammer")available for loan, rent, or purchase? I've been looking around on the web with no success, and would really like to check for ECU fault codes/status. Unfortunate that the the 968 series missed the OBD standard (mandated in 1996) by a year, the OBD interface hardware/software abounds.
Thanks in advance

I'm extremely happy it's not OBDII, you can try purchasing the Durametric software and cable
you could always just start with a blink test
Yep, a blink test will be the easiest indicator of any stored faults. The Durametric for the 968 is really only useful for a few things on the 968 as the computer interface just isn't as sophisticated as present day vehicle electronics. Durametric is great for resetting the air bag lights and READING values, but isn't too useful for FIXING stuff. For example, I had it plugged into a tiptronic car to diagnose the dash light and it told me what the problem was (fault code) but wouldn't allow me to write any changes. Durametric for all the newer cars is wonderful and is very useful for coding dash indicators and making adjustments.

oh yes it is - i do real time data logging with it - it tells me all sorts of stuff - it was very helpful in logging lambda readings, timing values, and such - can't do any adjusting with it that i can see, but it does give you all sorts of information
correct...
Durametric is great for resetting the air bag lights and READING values, but isn't too useful for FIXING stuff.
lol - i guess that depends on your definition of "fixing stuff" - while it can only reset codes once you have found them and actually made the repair of the part, and cannot repair the part itself, it is an invaluable tool in tuning, and can really help with the differential diagnosis of many components
for example, it can read the temp sensor - this can help you in determining the faulty cooling system component
Yeah, my definition of fixing stuff was referring to the newer era cars where you can actually use it to modify things in the factory programming. For example, I can turn the door open warning gong off on my Cayenne. Lots of data in the 968 ECU for sure. As we've both discovered, you can't use Durametric to make any changes per se. You have to burn a new ECU. Now that we've got that out of the way............ <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Hopefully, the OP can cure what ails him.

lol - he may have to do it by popping up here, which would be fine if it were early tomorrow morning - just not sure the timing works for him
Then there's the other method, build your own interface like I did (for fun <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />) and use Scantool software. Took me a year to get around to it but it is nice not to have black tape on the airbag light!
<img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> The Durametric price seems a bit steep @ $795 considering it's essentially an interface cable, 50' extension, adapter, and CD in a custom carrying case. Do they just sell the PC software? I think i could fab the adapter and cable fairly easily..........
I have a modified cct you can breadboard and the software. if you want to attempt this PM me.
Thanks for all the information guys. Dave I'll chat with you through e-mail I looking forward to fabing a solution.

i still have the durametric here and could check and/or clear things for you
Flash, thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that. At this point I'm looking at researching fault history, no warnings to clear, except the lame brake pad warning light, but I'll be jumping the sensor circuit for that at next opportunity.
