So just the other week I was noticing problems with the clutch pedal and then it got bad enough to where it would stay to the floor going from reverse to 1st and 1st to second. After reading forums I figured it was the line and ay least on of the cylinders that had failed. I took it to plaza porsche and they said it needed a new clutch line and master cylinder. I also had them look at the brake lines because i was needing to pump my brakes randomly and they said there were corroded lines. I also needed an alignment. They quoted me for 1200 for everything. From what I've read I should go ahead and do the slave cylinder now as well. So my question is do I let them deal with it or install myself? It seems like people have said it is fairly easy but I wasn't sure what all I would need or the process to even get it done..
It's not hard to install the master and slave if you have some mechanical ability. You can read about the process on Clark's Garage. The instructions are for the 944, but the 968 is very similar.
It sounds more like you have air in the system and it needs to be bled. I would bleed the brakes and clutch before replacing things. If that works then replace the fluid and run with it for a while.
Also I would try and find a good independent Porsche shop to work on the car, the dealer is usually not the best place. Your local Porsche club in St Louis should have some suggestions.
Getting all the air out can (or will) be a PITA, but some perseverance, patience and making sure the reservoir stays full enough does the trick. Also: like Bandit says: to get the last bit out some driving around will do the trick...
Yup we bled all the lines and that ended up just making it worse, im assuming because the more pressure caused the failing parts to get even worse.
It can be difficult to bleed it correctly. I would still get a second opinion from a independent shop specializing in Porsches, I wouldn't' trust the dealer. According to your local PCA site, it looks like Reid Vann might be an option for a second opinion, at the least I would expect them to cost less than the dealer.
