As some of you may know or have experienced, when one motor runs and the other doesn't, you can snap the lower aluminum support (this is the support member that is vertical with a rubber seal for the window, which is bolted to the frame) on the side the motor does not operate.  I bought mine with one broken and a flimsy patch.

 

I have gone strictly manual, removed the cables and the motors.  In the process, I discovered 3 relays which are only mentioned in the schematic with no given location.

 

For those who plan to keep theirs original it might behoove you to check them out.  

 

They are located on the right side near the fuel filler cap.  To get to them you need to pull the carpet back that reveals the gas fumes canister,  pull it further back because the relays are below the where the top's window starts.  One relay switches the polarity for the other two relays, for up and down.  The other two relays activate each respective motor.  They are generic relays like those found in the fuse section.  

 

The point here is that if one relay goes bad, the motor which may be good, won't actuate and then.... big problems.

Arrgh... need to do a correction.  There are only two relays, one for each motor.  The mind's eye saw three... the ones under the passenger floor board.  Of course the toggling of the switch changes the polarity for the dc motors. 

... as I messed up on the number of relays I thought I'd post a picture.  If you look at the right side of the trunk on the vertical sidewall and compare it with the left side,  you'll see a flat spot on the right.  The relays are behind the flat spot of the carpet .  In the picture, you'll notice no relays but the socket in which they reside.  I took mine out along with the associated fuse as I didn't want any shorts. Be curious to know if this solves anyone's problem with their top.   B)

i don't think i have those in mine, or at least not in the same spot.  i sure don't remember those when i put the dynamat in there, and i put it on every surface.

I wonder if padding is covering them up.  They are definitely there.  They have to be.  The two motors sit on top of the rear deck and they're fed by wire that comes from underneath as the picture shows. The side carpet (not the bottom carpet with the flap that covers the balance weight) pulls back on mine and you see the fuel canister etc.  Pull it further back and you reveal the lower brace for the rear deck... should be right there.

I'll be in there this weekend when I am removing my stuff and putting the spare and such back in there. I'll take another look

Not to beat this into the ground description wise but for others as well...

 

If you pull the carpet back so that it reveals the cable connected to the T handle release for the right side fold down seat, its about 5 inches back and to the left.

i'll definitely be in there, as i restoring the top to power mode tomorrow.  i planned to test everything before i hit that switch.  no desire to break a bow.

So did you find the relays or is my '93 an oddity in the Cabriolet relm.  I can't imagine they'd be that different.

lol - i didn't get in that area yet.  maybe tomorrow.

Yeah, I gather putting the top back in operation was quite an ordeal.  Keep me posted...

Just to add closure to this thread... there are 3 relays associated with the top.  One in the fuse box which sends a signal to either of the two in the trunk as disclosed.  The two in the trunk determine the direction the top takes. One for up and one for down. Which is which you'll have to determine on your own but shouldn't be too difficult.
