One just has to ask why in the world Porsche put EVERYTHING in that little corner. The coil, the distributor, the power steering reservoir and tubing, the oil filter, the heater control valve, huge water pump to radiator hose. What a congested mess. It's very hard to work on, things are rubbing on each other and it just doesn't look good.
Lear you are so right! Lots of stuff coming together at once. An inelegant mess. Makes me think twice about using the taller filter - now worrying about that close fit between timing cover and filter case.
I was interested in installing this Canton Filter in my car. Did some research here and found correct part but also found a guy, with a 968 on another site that had a different experience. a 968 owner from Annandale, VA. Not sure if he is on this site.

Here are his comments:

Sure enough, when I went to unscrew it to replace the cartridge, I unscrewed the entire filter. Of course, I then got the usual deluge of used oil all over the suspension and steering components on my car -- yuck!! So I paid more than $100 for a convenient oil filter that offered me no convenience at all.

He claimed due to lack of space he could not hold the filter body while unscrewing top cap.

Has anyone else experienced this?

thanks

John
that means he over-tightend the lid and/or did not lube the o-ring enough, and when he went to crack it loose, it spun both pieces - it happens - the instructions are very clear about not doing that

there is a filter wrench tool that will get in there and hold it though - i have them - sears sells them
The Canton site also sells seal kits

26-852 - 26-850 - OIL FILTER SEAL KIT - CM SPIN-ONS W/ SPIN-ON END CAPS (26-852)

This oil filter seal kit includes all the seals used in our CM spin-on oil filters that use spin-on end caps.

Our Price: $6.00

Do you need this for every filter change (like the new seal that comes with each spin-on)? Or is the kit for the initial installation, which I assume one would not change unless you accidentally unscrewed the filter housing or it had been several years/miles since you put the housing in.

Thanks
i don't change those unless i have to remove the canister
I installed the canister kit and all is well.

Won't know until the next oil change how involved it will be to remove the lid without having to fiddle with the canister.
Installed the canton oil filter , easy install and looks great .

I have the upgraded one with the 4 allen bolts holding the lid , so no unscrewing issues when replacing the filter element .

Got it from summit , for a 136$ , 3 days to arrive in the Netherlands , that is very nice for just standard international shipping .

Oil pressure seems the same , only difference is that during start it does seem to bring the pressure up a litte quicker than before , wich would be a +
Does anyone know the part number for the canton oil filter cartridge replacement?

You can order them from Summit Racing Equipment. I would order the multi pack to save on shipping. All you need is the dimensions of the old one to match it, there are only a few choices.
