About 475 miles (2.5 months) ago, Beverly Hills Porsche did an oil change on my 968. Today, in traffic, the Engine Oil light came on, along with the big red exclamation point. Checked several times, hot and cold, with a dip-stick; engine oil is fine. Added a quart of Mobil 1 Synthetic, just to be safe. Engine oil pressure responds the way it normally does. Everything seems fine.
The oil sensor was changed about 4 years (~5,000 miles) ago. Looks like this one's gone south too. :\
I'll get it in ASAP for that, but in the meantime, is there a way to reset the error code / clear the big red ! ?
You can unplug the sender on the side of the oil pan; I'm pretty sure it's a grounded switch, but check polarity just to be safe. If unplugging it doesn't make the light go off (when ignition is off), then push a jumper into the connector to complete the ground. Temporary solution only. Good luck.
the oil level was fine and then you added a quart???
eeek! i've heard that very bad things happen from that

Like?
I only put maybe 5 miles on since then (from the Auto Zone at La Cienega and Pico, back to Park La Brea).
Can drain a bit tomorrow before running it again.
What's the potential damage?
[quote name='flash' date='Oct 7 2005, 11:14 PM']blown seals and such

Think it'll be safe to creep down about 2 miles to a Jiffy Lube type place tomorrow mornin'? (I've been driving with the RPMs at or below 2200, until the engine mounts get replaced. Taking her out once a week or so, just to keep moving parts moving...)
anybody know if this is a sealed system, or if removing the filler cap will create a vent until he gets there?
Closing the loop... I decided to chance it (my luck's been good lately) and nursed it (try 5th gear at 35 mph) a mile to the Jiffy Lube at La Brea and Melrose, at 7am. Had them do a full oil change, Mobil 1 Synthetic; $60, better safe than sorry. (Discounted since my filter, being 500 miles old, didn't need swapping.) Then took her on an easy 120 mile loop, all freeway, 6th gear, 2500 rpm, 65mph. Nothing adverse as of yet, knock on wood. Even the stupid Check Engine light went out (thinking I need to try cleaning the contacts on my knock sensors, before dropping the change to replace them, since it's so intermittent), though not the Engine Oil nor the exclamation point. :\
Well, she's back under cover for another couple of weeks... I'll sort out more then.

Disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes.
I wouldn't worry about too much oil (one quart) since many of us add an extra quart over full when driving on the track to prevent oil starvation in extreme tight corners. I have been doing this for a few years with no problems resulting (and no oil starvation in the corners!). good luck, Bob Blackwell.
really? i haven't done it, but only because of the horror stories i've heard of and the explicit "do not overfill" warnings from porsche - i used to always run a half quart over full in my other cars for the same reasons
interesting
Hmm, a little story about a car I had in 1983.
I lived in Villahermosa, Mexico and had a Volkswagen Caribe (Golf/Rabbit) with it's regular 1900 engine.
I had it at the official Volkswagen place for an oil change, when driving home and overtaking a truck I noticed a lot of smoke in my mirror but it disappeared after some 10 seconds.
I was not sure where it was from but when the same happened while overtaking the next truck I understood it was my own car.
I stopped en checked the oil level, it was extremely high!
I slowly returned to the dealer where we found out they had put in new oil without draining the old...
