...as I 'learn' the 968, I am somewhat surprised that the steering has as much play as it does off center. I've yet to do a hardcore canyon hack in it yet, so maybe these cars just have the 'autobahn' relaxation off center. Regardless, It doesn't possess anywhere near the feel I had imagined. Don't get me wrong, its an accurate and linear rack, but somewhat disconnected in feel. Is this a job for RS Barn's Rack Tack?

It doesn't have C4 Corvette steering numbness, but its not an early 911 either.

So what's up? I'm probably due to re-bush the rack, but am I expecting too much?

Cheers,

A feedback bump here.
I'm surprised by this comment, as I find the steering to be quite quick and precise. It's possible you have suspension issues. I'm prepared to have to be much more careful once I get my car back from RS Barn with the new M030 sway bars and upgraded castor blocks. As for the comparison with an early 911, I can't comment at all as I've never driven one. However, I'd imagine the 911 has significant oversteer compared to the 968, and that could account for the feeling you're reporting.
How early of a 911 are we talking about here? Are we comparing power-steering versus manual-steering issues?

It might also be that the rubber bushing that holds your steering rack (the "U" piece) is worn out.
i too find the steering very sloppy - i'd love to tighten that up more - but my perspective is different than most, coming from very light manual steer cars with no weight past the front axle

i have the rack tack, though i got it from paragon - it did snug up the intial bump a bit
I think I probably have worn bushings up front, and that's part of the problem. I totally agree that its precise, just more play than I expected. That being said, I've had several manual rack cars and a few modified Hondas. Honda steering in the earlier cars (like my 1988 Integra), is utterly razor sharp after lowering and suspension modifications. 1/4" of movement put me into the next lane on the freeway!

Cheers,

I think that's probably the case. I have it marked down for "round two" of mods.
