My car will not hold in 4th gear and when entering 3rd it has a bit of a clank sound but it holds OK. I dropped my car off at C&J Motor sports in Rockville and from the looks of the garage this is the guy I need. Outside of the 944s and 51’s he had some really rare gems that guys were having restored and about 4 race cars inside the garage. Seems well respected and trusted.
Getting to the point, I described how my car pops out of 4th gear and I was told that the gearbox on the 968 is a weak point on the car. He feels that the gearbox would have to be rebuilt or replaced to fix the problem correctly. The scary part is that from Porsche the 6 spd gearbox for our cars sell s at $8200.00 so I guess I’m looking at a rebuild. If anyone out there has been down this road your advice and the outcome of your refurbished gearbox is appreciated. labor will cost me around 2K assuming things don’t get too bad and as for parts, well my phone will be ringing later today with that info. Man, the waiting really hurts.
I had my transmision rebuilt when the pinion bearing had to be reshimmed. All mine needed were 2nd gear synchros, new bearings and seals throughout and the total cost including removal and reinstallation and adjustment in the car was $2,500. Since the rebuild and pinion bearing repair it has been troublefree with smooth shifting and no high-pitched whine. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
which shop did your work? I'm willing to ship it if the savings and expertise are going to be worth my while.
Flash- "still pretty steep - call bobby hall in arizona"
Flash, do you still have his info?
Russ Kelso of PMCI (Performance MotorCar Investments) in Corrales, New Mexico. 800 437-7624 pmciinc@comcast.net He has done transmissions for several others who have shipped them in and they are all as happy as I am with the work and the price. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
Thanx a ton Bob I will give him a call also. U guys are really helping my mood. Seriously! I was soo down before hitting the forums.
My pleasure, I agree, these Forums are the greatest thing lately. Hardly anything you can think of that someone on the Forum has not already experienced. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
Since you are in the DC Area, I would recommend IMA MOtorsports (Ivan Arzola). They did my pinion bearing repair and I have had no problems. They have a lot expertise on 968s. They are in the Merrifield,VA.

Ditto in IMA. They did my 968 box and do 1 or 2 a month. Chris Prack is a wizard with them. They're in Fairfax across from the big post office on Prosperity and next to the BMW dealer. 703-849-9590.
They run a shuttle to/from the Vienna Metro - They're also the Potomac PCA model experts for the 944/968.

All the support IMA is getting makes me feel comfortable w/ my decision to go with them. My car is there now. The thing about a good mechanic is they stay busy. I'm still waiting for him to LOOK at my car.
You have to be very patient with Ivan and his crew. They were short handed for a while and have such a great reputation so a lot of people want them to work on their cars. They have limited space. Don't be discouraged, they will do a great job.
I felt comfortable leaving my car there for that reason. Good price good service. Chris had an emergency which caused him to be off for a few days so being short handed, they got backed up. Chris and I talked and he apologized for the delay and gave me another date.
I'm patiently waiting as I rather have a delay and the outcome be a job well done, then to have it rushed only to return for more repairs later as problems crop up that could of been caught with extra care.
yes... well... going on five weeks and they're still not finished with mine... the best and worst thing about IMA is they love their race car more than their customers. when push comes to shove the racer always wins. meanwhile my poor cars sits baking in the fairfax sun... but having said that I'll take slow over incompetent any time.
Look on the bright side...Maybe Ivan will loan you HIS car
that's the ticket!
PS to matt, rhudeboy, or my man cosimo:
if you're in the area drop by IMA for me if you would please - I've left four messages in the last week and a half and NO REPLY. I'm feeling abandonded! IMA had the pinion repair done two or three weeks ago, then said "something was wrong with sixth gear" when it went back in the car - so they were going to take remove the unit again to diagnose.
You'd think the five grand or whatever I'm in for at this point would be worth a call-back. I'm patient by nature but really...
94silver: I suggested Ivan loan me his car but that didn't seem to jostle loose a response!
well Ivan called - apologizing - said I'm being victimized by a circlip that's the wrong size - we're waiting for parts to drip in from Germany... drip... drip... this has been a problem in the past: Porsche for some reason won't or can't keep the North American warehouse in stock - which means repeated tiny shipments from Germany. so by whatever magic my post to the board worked - maybe (fingers crossed I'll have the car back by the first of the week!
I called today as well and asked for Chris. After holding for a short while Ivan came to the phone and gave a 45 second apology before I could even say a word. I'm not sure if they even pulled my gearbox out yet. I was however promised a update and bottom line on the cost by tomorrow.
I'm really missing that car now. The weather today was soooo nice
