I went over to IMA yesterday and mentioned the lack of communication. He apologized for the delay. I see he got back to you. I have been going to Ivan for 12+ years and have always found him to honest and thorough. As for the race cars coming first remember they are customers too. The race car that he built (the blue monster) took 3 years to build. He reputation for quality work has him at the top of the list for prepping race cars. He needs a scheduler and phone answerer. He has asked me if I wanted the job and i'm thinking about it. I'm just not enthused about commuting every day. I love Porsches and it would be something to get my A$$ out of the house but commuting from where I live to his place is a real PIA.
This is such a great display of the power of these forums!

Kudos to Cosimo for "taking the bull by the horns" and "way to go" to Ivan for responding to the challenge...

Hope you all have smooth running 968's soon

Jay
Cosimo - yes thanks so much for stopping by! Between Tony and Cosimo Soprano I feel like I'm in good hands.
Prego, sono contento fare te.
Did you notice if a black 968 w/ MD tags was up on the lift?
As of Tuesday, it was not on a lift. Was out of town yesterday.

As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
My car will not hold in 4th gear and when entering 3rd it has a bit of a clank sound but it holds OK. I dropped my car off at C&J Motor sports in Rockville and from the looks of the garage this is the guy I need. Outside of the 944s and 51’s he had some really rare gems that guys were having restored and about 4 race cars inside the garage. Seems well respected and trusted.

Getting to the point, I described how my car pops out of 4th gear and I was told that the gearbox on the 968 is a weak point on the car. He feels that the gearbox would have to be rebuilt or replaced to fix the problem correctly. The scary part is that from Porsche the 6 spd gearbox for our cars sell s at $8200.00 so I guess I’m looking at a rebuild. If anyone out there has been down this road your advice and the outcome of your refurbished gearbox is appreciated. labor will cost me around 2K assuming things don’t get too bad and as for parts, well my phone will be ringing later today with that info. Man, the waiting really hurts.

Although it was done several years ago, the total to replace the pinions in my '93 was $1750. at a dealer with none too cheap labor rates. At the time the advice was to go with whoever had the special tools required and the experience; reassembly is a sensitive proposition.

jeees you guys pay hefty price over there, i had my gearbox rebuilt due to pinion bearing and lsd bearings letting go, total cost was 750.00 GBPs. But on the other hand all your performance and trick parts are cheap. anyway i hope your box is ok when you get it back, regards pazzer.
When I did my turbo conversion I swapped out 3rd~6th gears for some shorter ratio Powerhaus II gears. My car is a '95 coupe.

If you're interested I can dig up my OEM gears. It may help soften the blow of your overhaul costs.

Get back to me, with an E-mail, if you're interested.

sent email and PM.

I would like to buy your 3rd and 4th gears.

call me 301 442-4892
I've just sent an E-mail to the mechanic who did my conversion...I asked him to locate the gears for us.

I expect to hear back from him early next week. I'll confirm that , and get back to you...just to make sure.

Good mechanics for our cars are hard to come by. I trailered my 928 300 miles (one way) to what's known by many as the best 944/928 mechanic in the Northwest and it took him 3 months to get to the Tbelt/Water Pump Job...and a couple of leaks. But..not a problem in four years...and this was after trying out and being dissatisfied 2 other "Exotic German Car" mechanics who were closer by.

I do much of my own work now...and I'm not a heck of a lot faster because I'm pretty anal about my cars.

Harvey
Jason- Thanks for the call and I appreciate your help in getting my 68 back on the road. I look fwd to hearing from you next week on the gears. (I'll keep my fingers crossed).

Harvey- I plan on doing more of my own work as well. The down time will probably balance out to be the same as when I drop it off w/ the pro’s and the labor is more then enough motivation. I got the manual on CD from Darryl but as I looked through it for instructions on my AC unit, it seemed to be incomplete. If it’s not a step-by-step manual w/ pics to reassure me, I'm hesitant to start removing bolts.
Hopefully my (ex) mechanic will release the parts to me, so I can help out Rhudeboy...

Pretty ugly situation developed when I had my car dyno'd at another place and we found A/F numbers were off. My original mechanic initially said to bring it back in, because he said he stood behind his work. When I brought the car in, he saw that I had some brake cooling ducts put in, replaced the rotted out muffler, and went nuts that somebody else touched the car. He told me to 'Kiss-Off' in not so many words.

Now, I hope he'll return my old parts!

Jason
Hopefully he just needs time to cool off.

I had a sales rep once do the same to me. I found a much cheaper price on the item, so when he came by to see me I told him that I will not be going through with the order. Speaking out of frustration he tells me that I dragged him along just to waste his time and that my actions doesn't make any Damn sense. My reply " I think we're done here" and showed him the door. I got a call at the end of the day from him explaining his actions. As it turned out he had 2 deals fall through do to mistakes of his delivery and packaging Dept and when he heard me cancel also he lost it. No excuse but we all understand effects of a bad day.

I do hope with all the history you and your mechanic have that things don't end on such a soar note. And of course I also want those gears
Rhudeboy,

Good news!

My ex-mechanic said he would dig up the parts over the next week...or so.

It looks like I'll be able to get you the gears!

That is good news. However Ivan, at IMA, has found a used gear also but with a slightly higher price.

I'm giving Ivan the green light to buy it, as the saying goes "a bird in the hand". Should your mechanic get the gears to you early next week please give me a call and I'll let Ivan know to hold off on the one he found. I will then pay to have yours Fed-Exed to IMA.

My ex-mechanic has put me off...again!

He said that he hasn't still had time to find them, because he's off to another track.

[post="27523"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
What makes a person act that way?

Ivan has moved fwd on my gearbox and so far so good. It appears that only 4th was damaged. I'm thinking of getting my timing belt changed while its there as its about do.

I do appreciate the update.
