I'm pretty sure the UK has indoor plumbing now, I was there in 88 and I didn't have to go outside <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> All you need is an ABS plumbing adapter, no special tubes required. I just went to the hadware store and picked up 4 - 2 1/4" adapters. They cut and shape easily with a saw and coarse file.
not necessarily true - the entry profile and curvature makes a big difference in both tone and in flow - it isn't just an aesthetic thing - the more curvature, the better for flow - square corners are BAD
i haven't seen the ones you are talking about, but you want at LEAST a 1/4" radius at the entry
Reading what Flash was saying about the radius entry on the airbox mods and he's right and it made me think about years ago when a loudspeaker manufacturer filled the port tube for bass speaker loading with straws(!) to linearise the flow and reduce turbulence. Also it might be an idea to also radius the tube's inside edge also to minimise diffraction of the air flow. Haven't stuck my nose into the the airbox but if there is enough depth, lenghtening the tube should also help smooth the airflow. Can the holes be drilled without removing the airbox from the car?

drilling - i doubt it - not a lot of room there - removal is easy though
longer ports - no room
radiusing - did it - i didn't bother to measure any change, and just trusted the physics

Just how much room is there internally Flash before you come up against something? As I'm thinking about having a two piece insert with a plastic nut type fixing internally and an "o" ring on the outside against a lip. I could easily mill some of the external rib structure away to allow this.

not much - maybe a bit over an inch at the bottom - remember that the air has to have room in there to move or you will create more turbulence than if you left the ports off altogether
there would be more if not for the internal ribs, but they act as a helmholtz absorber and really quiet things down
Supplemental information about the mod: I recorded maximum cabin volume before and after the mod doing several runs. Turns out with windows up and sunroof closed I registed 103db before the intake mod and 109db after. The before was completely stock with the K&N filter only, while the after had the filter and the holes drilled to specifications in instructions (no trim rings).
And what a wonderful 6 dB it was <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />
