Any original owners on the Forums?
#1

Just wondering if there are any guys on the forums here who have owned their car since new?

It's hard for me to imagine exactly how it would have looked and felt to drive this car new off the lot.

Anyone have good stories? What was the vibe for the car when it was in dealerships?

I test drove them new but couldn't afford them at the time. I had to wait for the 968s to depreciate so I puchased my first cab in 1996.

Now, Don H. purchased his coupe new and still has it. I know a 968er in my PCA club that has a cab since new and she has 150K miles on it. There is another women I met at Hershey and talked at a 968 celebration who has a 968 she ordered new. And Jim G. from the 968 register bought 1 new, sold it, and has another one now.

i also test drove one when it was new - i thought it was too heavy and slow - it just took me 15 years to figure out what to do about it

there are some original owners here - there is even a guy here locally

I was in the market for a car like the 968 when it was new (that was in my pre-parenthood days), but found it to be ridiculously over-priced relative to the competition, so I bought a 1993 RX7 twin turbo instead. Ironically, the kids came along soon afterwards, so I had to sell the RX7, since it was strictly a two-seater. Had I stretched for a 968, I could have kept it, thanks to the kid-sized back seats (a guy at work with a Corvette is forever teasing me about my "four-seater family car"), and I would have been among the rarified ranks of original owners...

yeah - the price tag was a limiting factor for me too - i built 3 mgbs for that amount (one full race, one street toy and one concours)

things would be very different had i have purchased a 968 back then - for sure i would have more pairs of topsiders and a lot more polo shirts

The 968s sold very poorly as we all know. My local dealer had 5 new coupes back in late 1994 for sale. They all stickered for $43K-$44K. He had them all on sale for $33K. There was a wimbledon green coupe that I really like. It sold first at that price. The last one to sell was a Oak green coupe. I was tempted. I had a 87 944 Turbo at the time but I also had two young kids so I couldn't do it.

Here is a photo of the oak green coupe at the dealer with my two children, Greg and Lauren (now 18 and 21).
