If there is one thing that drives me up a wall is when I see people use break in the following sentence. "I just replaced my breaks this morning." It is B R A K E S!!!! You stop with your brakes and you break wind when when you fart.

OK....sorry.

Flash,

I think a good part of the decline in the craft of the written word is the advent of technologies like word processors, email, spell-checking, and the internet itself. These have brought about a far greater emphasis on speed of information exchange, with much less weight being placed on the quality of that exchange. In other words, as long as the core of the message gets across quickly, who cares about a few grammatical mistakes, improper word choices, and a little butchered sentence structure? I think it's sad, but it's the world we live in. I'm definitely a throwback; I even capatilize the appropriate words, and use correct punctuation, in the text messages I send on my pager at work, as silly as that may seem to some.

Xrad, I agree with many of the gripes you cite in your post, but I have to take exception to your concern over the apparent imbalance of salaries in our society (though as an engineer, I greatly appreciate your desire to bring my salary closer to the level of our celebrities ). In our capatalist society, which, despite all of its warts, is by far the best system mankind has ever come up with (just ask the folks in Cuba, Venezuela, or the former Soviet Union), people are paid for the value they bring to their employers. By this measure, a top star like a Tiger Woods or a Michael Jordan is actually probably grossly UNDERpaid. These guys' salaries are paid by the people who watch them, mainly through the advertising dollars brought by the companies who are more than happy to display their products in front of the millions of fans who tune in; if enough people were to come around to your way of thinking that these folks are overpaid, they could easily correct the situation by stopping watching them. But that will happen as soon as pigs take flight. So, this is one I wouldn't lose a whole lot of sleep over. Although, an eight-figure salary for for figuring out how to create better semiconductors would sure go a long way toward my scoring that new ITB Pete apparently has up his sleeve...

Cloud 9: I call most sports and news and checkout isle rags and much of the other crap "the brainwashing of Americans." Other capitalist societies are able to move somewhat beyond this(or it has not crept into their way of life with the same 'importance' it has here). Who really gives a s*** who wins American idol...or what kind of underwear Paris has on (OK bad example)..you know what I mean.

It's always a good time to make a big government political or military move around a major sports event. People(Americans), as a whole, are easily sidetracked.

Don't get me wrong, I love this country and would not want to live anywhere else(except maybe Australia..they are big into racing down there) . The USA is the biggest baddest gang in the world, but we all just need to focus on making things better in this country first.

As for high salaries, these have just snowballed beyond reason....

my opinion...

true, although not nearly as funny ( and as puzzling - talk about annoying web things ! ) as Comcast's call in options menu, which I kid you not, states: " if you have problems connecting to the internet press 2, OR, IF YOU DONT WISH TO WAIT TO SPEAK TO A CUSTOMER SERVICE REP, YOU CAN ALSO VIEW COMMON TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS BY VISITING OUR SITE AT WWW.COMCAST.NET
Story #3: wonder why gas prices are so high? Wonder why the national debt really sucks? Gee, why can't Iraq pay for some of the BILLIONS (reminds me of Carl Sagan..'billions and billions...') of $'s spent on the war with "reimbursement" oil. Oh yeah, that reminds me, why is the war off the front page..American's still dying there. What the hell are we doing there anyway if we are not getting the oil? PS. Want to make good money? Invest in military supply companies and oil companies (at least until we all can't stand to pay them anymore)
Lack of proper capitalization also disrupts the reading flow, just like misspellings, improper word choice, lack of punctuation and other bad practices. If you want your message to be heard and you respect your audience, take the time to create a nice, legible post. If fifty people are going to read your post, it makes sense for one person (the poster) to take an extra 10 seconds to do it right.

Creating a well-written posts shows that you made a sincere effort to communicate and deserve the same in kind.

I think important information can be missed by a reader who just critiques a post for the above offenses.

Unless it is typed with ghetto or childish spellings and slang, I really dont care about proper grammar, so long as I learn something new.

Not everyone cares, but it's true that words on the screen are easier and more pleasant to read if spelled correctly, punctuated, and capitalized.

Slang is no problem, even txt and 1337 has it's place and is kinda fun. What I am talking about is making the effort to make your post look good for the tens or hundreds of people who are going to read it. Why not? It's easy. Just use Firefox and the browser shows your mistakes underlined in red.

If you are making a speech in front of a group, I would think you would not do it with a mouthful of cheetos. You clear your throat and speak loudly and clearly. Respect your audience and make the effort.

lol - ok - i am no innocent here, but as long as we're at it and having some fun then:

can you go back up and edit the second paragraph to fix the run-on of the first two sentences?

also, can you add another space between each sentence? there should be two, not one

indentation of 5 spaces, or a skipped line between paragraphs, is also correct - there is neither on the second paragraph

i agree with the sentiment, and would love to see everyone do that - but, even i am willing to make allowances for convenience - capitalization and full punctuation is a pain - while it does catch spelling errors, my browser of choice does not catch punctuation or capitalization - i do not want to use firefox at this time

i certainly don't want to end up with newspeak or unitelligible gibberish, but a certain amount of flexibility is expected on these boards

no perfect world

fun to talk about this though

I agree with Joel on this one, and appreciate the respectful way he expressed his sentiment on the topic. I guess it's a matter of personal opinion, but I also find it very distracting to sift through a bunch of careless grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. It makes me quickly lose interest in the topic the writer is trying to communicate. Not a huge deal, really, and not at the top of my list of things to lose sleep over, but I find a well-written post much more enjoyable to read than one that's carelessly slapped together.

Truth be told I'm not that great at spelling, grammar or punctuation (or typing for that matter) but I am trying very hard. FWIW there are two spaces between my sentences, the proportional font hides them. You are willing to forgo capital letters and most punctuation, some people forgo showers and deodorant. Everybody chooses the amount of effort they are willing to put forth to make an impression. I'm not saying you should do things differently (or shower) but just pointing out what my impressions are based on how people express themselves.

I'm sure books and articles have been written about what one's writing/posting style says about them. I should go find one, I think it would be interesting to read... however as I just changed the fuel pump in my truck I think a beverage and a soak in the hot tub is in my immediate future.
