He often will not answer my call but will respond to a text. I suspect this may be, in part, because being overhead talking to Dad is embarrassing.
Sigh........

Tom and I live in parallel universes...with our sons in parallel universities So yes, text is not the only, but definitely a primary method of
communication. Practical, and necessary.
But even at work, I find myself texting to colleagues if I need to contact them right away - " call me asap " usually is the least intrusive way to reach them if they're in a meeting, they're not online, or at their desk, and/or simply don't want to be interrupted by a ringing phone...and this way they also know who's trying to reach them. I also prefer the courtesy of a text advance notice, if I'm in that situation. I suppose I can put the phone on silent and not answer it, but it's possible I may want to step out of a long and boring meeting to speak to someone who's trying to reach me, so I don't mind this technology at all.
What I do mind the most is call option trees that seem to be never ending and if you press 0 ( thinking you'll bypass that ridiculous and annoyingly long menu and be transferred to a human ) you get, a " I'm sorry, I don't understand that command - to go back to the main menu press.. " X" )
Sigh........
