I found it rather impossible to source the right trim rings over here in The Netherlands. Anyone knows of a US website that ships them internationally, preferably NOT via UPS?

I don't have the trim rings.Seems to work OK.

Everyone who has looked under the hood of our 968 said "do you know you have holes in your airbox?"

sure it works. it just works better with smoother airflow. the sound changes too, and loses some of that "farty" characteristic.



the differences though are small, and not likely to be noticed on a street car.

Got around to checking this out, and am doing it in stages.  I shortened the snorkel so that it hangs just above the "whole".  Noticeable improvement at least "sound" wise.  I don't want to get to into it until I get my MAF thing straightened out. Anyway had a question on the short extension the snorkel attaches to.  Anyone cut that down to be flush with the box? Make any difference?

removal is indicated in the DIY for good reason.  the snorkel is not needed when you put the holes in there (be sure to use rounded edge ports, to promote smoother intake and avoid disrupting the airflow

So my PO had a k+n cone air filter installed with a performance chip. Is the cone air filter a bad "match" for the 968 in terms of air flow, or does the air box mod restrict air flow, as does the exhaust, to maximize performance? I switched to an RS Barn chip after i bought the car and like the improvement in performance. I did a couple of searches but i couldn't find an answer.

the car that I bought from RS Barn came with the modifications all done. Regarding the rings, that were glued into the holes to neaten them up, they appear to be the type of ring one would put on a desk, to neaten up appearance of computer wire holes. One could probably get them at a office depot or
staples

I was referring to the port that the snorkel attaches to. It sticks out and could be routed out...

My question is does the soft rubber seal around the snorkel intake also need to be removed?. It is covering part of the intake.

yes.  it allows then more air up into the area, and further removes more airflow disruption.  it removes very easily

By the way, I used a much simpler solution to direct the airflow into the air box. I used standard size inserts (available at most hardware stores) made for an office desk. I already had the drill when I built an office desk for my wife. The inserts set me back $5 each. I made two holes, one on each side of the air box intake. These are larger than the recommended four holes but they allow the same amount of air.

Noticeable difference in performance. Not a lot, but about 5-10 HP difference 

 

PS. Did remove the rubber seal today, yes an easy 30 second operation.

the problem with the ones for the desk holes is the square edge.  it creates turbulence.  this may or may not have been offset by the larger size.  i never tested that.

 

done as indicated in the DIY, the mod gives 11.8hp all by itself.  i only wish it added that much to a chip.  diminishing returns though.  added to a chip, you get about half

These are actually nice and rounded and with a deep seat around 1/1/2 inch. It seems like they work fine, definitely a better performance....I am happy with them.

it's the inside edge that is the issue, not the outside edge.  there should be a large radius on that.  the bigger the better.   we were able to measure the disruption due to a square entry edge.  yes, you will still get improvements.  you just won't get it all.

 

it's amazing though how many times i tell people to buy subwoofer ports, and not use "other" stuff, and how many times i am ignored.  i presume it's because they don't want to spend the money, and that they don't understand the physics involved, but it definitely is a phenomenon.
