Advice on Reupolstering?
#1

I'm looking into redoing my seats. I'm leaning towards retaining the stock recipe of leather fronts with vinyl back and sides. I'm considering leatherseats.com. Anyone have experience with them? Anyone else to recommend? Suggestions and tips appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you, my drivers side seat upholstery is shot. I also have a few headliner issues, on of which I tired to fix yesterday to no avail. There are some good auto upholstery shops in our area so there might be some good advice on what to do. The only advantage of the half leather seats that I can see is cost. My 944 had sports seats which were full leather and I never had any issues with the sides or back of the seats. Just the same wear and tear on the bolsters from getting in and out of the car.

I had my drivers side reupholstered. I was told they have discontinued the leather/vinyl combination, so only full leather is available. It cost me $900 to have the seat done. Bill , how bad are your seats? I have used leatherworld dye on the passenger seat and looks as good as the drivers side. If it's just the bolster that can be replaced.

i've not been terribly impressed with the "kits" out there. the leather looks good, and the stitch work looks fine, but after being fitted, they seem a bit loose. this is likely due to the old foam no longer being as "poofy" as the pattern was made for.

any decent upholsterer can do this job from scratch though. it should be anywhere from $500 to $700 per seat. i just had mine redone in porsche perforated cashmere, and it was in that range.

I looked into Classic 9 Leather Shop and Paul Champagne leather shops. They do great work but they are a bit more expensive. I may spend a little more and get a set of Recaros instead when my seats go.

I need to move to SoCal ! If you can find a DECENT shop here to do it for less than $ 1,500 a seat, it's a damn bargain !

Paul Champagne does amazing seats. I've seen some of his work in person. He has a long wait though, usually. I'm going to try a local shop that comes highly recommended and limit the work to the bolsters.

lol - at $1500 a seat you can ship them here and back, and get them redone, and have enough left over to buy the leather for the dash and console.

I got a chance to meet Robert Budd of Classic 9 last October when I hosted the 16th annual 928 Frenzy. He came in as a vendor and his work is very nice. He has a pretty good wait too.

I've got two or three places around here that I would trust to do a nice job and it's about 1500.00 per pair, give or take, and depends on the seat and material. Over the summer, I hope to have my heated sport seats done in light gray, so we'll see how much that bill is.

I had the drivers side seat with full leather (vinyl/leather no longer available) was arounf $1000. They do excellent work. They also offered to do both seats for $1600.

Leatherseats.com quoted me around $700 for both seat covers, leather front/vinyl sides and back (just like my OEM). It might be a little more with some options (piping or stitching - perforations, etc.). Then I'll have to get my local guy to do the install. I spoke with the leatherseats.com guy about trying to install myself. He said that over the years the original seats and foam will shrink up to 1/2 inch. A good upholstery shop will steam the foam to get it to expand back to original size and replace any of the foam that needs it. They are sending me some samples to get the color right. Being that I have a cab, I think the leather/vinyl combo might be preferable to all leather since it's going to see a lot of sun.

i thought the same thing. i went ahead with full leather, but i also don't let the car sit in the sun.

steaming the foam won't bring it back for long. it will compress back down. you need to replace whatever foam has shrunken if you plan to use pre-made covers.

for that money though, you may as well go custom. you will need a half hide of leather (about $250) and some vinyl (about $100). then it's about $500 per seat in labor.

as for the color, if your interior is cashmere, make sure it's cashmere and not champagne. they are really close, and a lot of places mess up.
