Advice on fire suppression device
#1

What is a good fire extinguisher to install for DE and where to buy it?

I am looking for low weight and functional unit, not necessarily the top of the line. Are there units that can be attached to existing mounting points, e.g., underneath the seats?

brey krause makes a mount that goes to the seat mounting points - i just gave one to rustech, so contact him - he may have the part number

i am goin with a tube mounted one, since i am in a cab and will have the chassis brace

you may need to go to a race shop for the extinguisher - i heard that halon is no longer available at normal outlets

i have to look in to this myself now too, for my car, so let me know what you find out

I bought a 5-lb halon unit off eBay and had it topped off locally by a guy who replenishes fire exthingishers. There's Halon and "Son of Halon" I don't know what he used.

I know of 2 928s that have gone up in flames due to gas fires under the hood.

definitely want something in there, and have always had it in the toys - just hadn't gotten around to it in this one yet

a call to the local extinguisher service company seems in order

is there enough space underneath the seats? Seems to me like there's only about 1.5" clearance down there.

This is an old photo from my 944, but I use a Stable Energies mount. I think the BK mount is similar. It doesn't actually go underneath the seat, but the space in front of the seat -- the extinguisher would be underneath the legs of the passenger.

The mount easily fits a 2.5lb fire extinguisher, among other important cargo...

the BK is a stainless tubular mount that has tabs that catch a pair of seat mounts, either front or rear, and puts the extinguisher right in front of or behind the seat

Flash,

I checked www.ioportracing.com and they seem to have several racing fire extinguishers available. The cheapest 3lb Halon unit retails for ~$280, but there is a dry chemical unit (soda), that retails under $40 with a mounting strap. Is Halon necessary or dry chemical also O'k to use?

The BK piece is nice, but when mounted limits the travel of the sliders.

andre - i haven't checked what the regs are lately - they just went through a change though - i'll get into that one soon if somebody else doesn't first - i'm kind of swamped right now

clem - yeah - figured that - one of the reasons i gave it to eric
