Air bag deactivation switch
#1

I did a search on this, and nothing came up. I remember some discussion on it years ago on 968.net, but I don't remember it being very descriptive. I imagine it's somewhat tricky, and would require a very high quality switch.

I did a google search on the topic awhile back, and was told I need to apply for a form from the NHTSA, which I did. They sent me a form I need to have the installer fill out, and mail back to the NHTSA. Has anybody gone through this before? I have a ten-year-old who's probably big enough to start riding in the front seat, so I'd like to install an air bag kill switch for her safety. Thanks.

No one, huh? OK, I'll dig into the wiring diagram and see if I can find a wire to splice into that looks like it makes sense. Any recommendation as to the type of switch that should be used for something like this? Whatever I come up with, I'll post a DIY for anyone else who might be interested.

interested as well. called a dealer yesterday and they won't do it without a child seat kit. no child seat kit made for 968's.

I haven't done this, but I think you'll find there's more to it then simply putting a switch into one of the airbag wires - IF you want to avoid having the airbag warning light up. You probably need to create a dummy load and have the switch choose between the airbag circuit and the dummy load that will have the system think the airbag circuit is still there. There have been posts that indicate that replacing the airbag with a 3 ohm load is the way to go. The passenger side, though, has two airbag modules, so you'll have to figure out if you need one resistor, two in parallel, or something else.

Again - this comment is NOT from direct experience. Rather, it's from following what people have done to eliminate airbags (driver's side when a non-airbag steering wheel is installed) without having the warning light stay lit.

I have installed passenger side airbag on/off switch on my '94 968 Cab,

with a switch and help from: http://www.airbagonoff.com/

See bottom thumnail for photo

As I had to go on at least one iteration (got the 1st switch, installed, triggered airbag light, uninstalled,

got 2nd type switch, installed, now working), the owner knows which of their switch is correct for our 968,

so it should be plug & play (for pass. side, at least).

The owner was eager to help & make sure that his switch works.

I can post a diagram for passenger side (with the usual disclaimer), if anyone's interested.

I, too, have children and have obtained a NHTSA letter prior to installing this switch.

Thanks; I called these guys, and they sound very helpful. Their switch and installation kit is a bit pricey, though, at $168 with shipping, and I'm a bit low on cash at the moment, so I'm afraid my 10-year-old will have to continue riding in the back for a little while. Nice to know this is doable, though.
