a tale of two tips
#1

does anyone have ( or can point me to ) a photo of the two different OE exhaust tip styles on our cars ? I understand one was a rolled edge and more oval shaped vs the other which was a straight edge and a diagonal cut ? I am interested in looking at them side by side to see if i like the one i have on my new car better or if i should buy the other ( assuming Porsche still has those parts available )

I bought a stainless rolled tip a few years ago from Parts Heaven in Hayward - I think it was about 80 bucks. It was black but polished up it looks great. I like the rolled tip better as the edge catches the light, making it stand out more. The straight cut tip is more 'invisible' if you'd rather your exhaust be more low key.

Not the greatest angle on the tip, but:

You can see some of the stainless peeking through the black paint on the rolled edge. Not sure why Porsche chose to paint these black - polished stainless is such a good look!

Also, notice the angled cut on the stock tip - it's not just angled back from vertical, but also slightly angled to the left to follow the curve of the rear bumper. Nice attention to detail.

BTW, that's the Broadfoot Racing unit on the left - talk about weight savings!

Thanks ! And I agree, no idea what Porsche was thinking, I'd say the majority of people prefer the polished look to black paint on exhaust tips. I certainly do.

I stripped my tip years ago as soon as I found out they painted the SS black at the factory.

Not sure how many exhaust tips choices are available out there that are just plug and play ( a simple bolt-on to the OE assembly) ones which fit really well in the carve-out space, and if they do indeed exist, where to find them.. Just the tip itself, not looking for a whole catback system that also has the tip, LOL..

The only issue I have with my "new" 968 is that the tip is recessed at the top about 1/4" inside the rear's body line, making the whole thing is practically invisible, particularly since the bottom is slanted inward even more so. It's not that would I like the exhaust tip to stick out too much, but a sensible, say 1/2" or so protruding out of the body line would be aesthetically preferable ( to me..) .

I was thinking a dual tip might be nice as well, but first I dont know if I can find one that fits just right and secondly no idea if it might affect either the sound or inhibit the exhaust dynamics with a supercharger on the car.

Any suggestions ?

I've got the SS rolled tip in my garage. Left over from a cat back swap out.

If you want it, make me an offer.

Paul , will send you a PM later on today.

In the meantime, does anyone have a picture handy of what the rear of the car looks like with the rolled tip you could post ?

here's what I have on now

The "tip" rotates, something like a ball joint if you loosen the nut. I noticed yours was rather corroded. Some penetrating fluid might do the trick to loosen. Once you loosen the nut (there's a collar that fits over the muffler) you can see if you can re-position the "tip" again you might have to use some penetrating fluid and maybe a rubber mallet to get it in place. Once you've got it positioned the way you'd like, a little 3M scouring pad (of the synthetic variety) will clean up that corrosion and give it that brushed steel look which all seem to agree is rather nicer than the painted original. Don't think you'll have to replace it...

Actually I had the tip off just five months ago while at flash's house and polished it as much as it could be, but it obviously did not take very long to look shabby once again. However, since it was off that recently I should be able to move it without too much effort , just don't know if the collar is long enough where I can pull it out by another inch and still have enough muffler pipe left to securely re-bolt it on.

Also I am interested to see what the rolled tip looks like, I might like it better anyway and if the neck collar is longer or the tip length itself is what might cause it to show outside the body line a bit, that could be preferable to the one I have. I'd still love a dual tip as the one in the photo below ( even if I'd have it on just one side ) but doubtful I can find that same tip and just mount it on the OE muffler neck without having to modify anything and / or weld it on. And even then the question of whether or not it will change the sound, or if it will restrict the flow ( especially with a SC ) remains....

Going by what's in the picture, it looks as though the tip is just pushed up to the upper portion of the bumper. As the tip is on a swivel like a ball joint, pushing it down should give you the extension which is the normal distance that the tip projects outward. From the picture it doesn't look as though your muffler system has been modified so that should be the case. The double tip arrangement is a matter of taste, and I suspect some custom modification of the bumper and muffler for a dubious benefit other than appearance. From a performance standpoint you'd be better off with the single pipe as illustrated in the 17 october 2013 photograph. Bernoulli principle.

Hmm, I did not get the ball joint / rotating reference in your earlier post, this explains it. Interesting that its' possible to push it down and also that move would would essentially extend its position to a more outward projected point. Will give that a shot. I might still buy the rolled tip version to switch, if it looks better, just have to see how it looks first ...

that car belonged to bracer. it had 2 short glass packs for mufflers, and would have to have been pretty loud and raspy, and probably lost a bit of power, due entirely to the nature of glass pack design.

he did a pretty clean job though, cutting up into the bumper cover, and then using some rubber edging to trim it.

the tip won't have much effect on sound, and little to none on performance. it can tweak some higher frequencies a bit, depending on the design, but that's about all. basically, opening it up will let out some lower raspier notes, while losing some high notes, and closing it off will attenuate those lower tones and smooth the high ones. again though, it's very minor, and almost indistinguishable between the OEM tips. only going to aftermarket stuff can make any discernable difference, and even then, it's minor.

I'll be curious to know how it turns out, my tip does appear to extend out farther, than what the arc of yours would indicate.

Just go drive your car hard for 20 minutes or so - once the exhaust system heats up and expands, your tip should be sticking out of the bodywork just like you want it to :-)

(no joke - this really happens!)

...and this is how far it should stick out (cold - when heated up, add +/- 3 feet)

it is a really odd phenomenon that i have noticed. not sure what's going on there, as the length should be reasonably fixed. material expansion should be minimal. there are no soft couplings at play either. nonetheless, i have noticed it too.

another "eyes playing tricks on you" oddity is how far it looks like it's sticking out, dependent on your angle. looking straight down, it's very easy for the smallest protrusion to look larger, due to the angle of the bumper cover.

i set mine 1/4" out, looking at it from the side (the one above looks to be about 1/2" - 3/4". by setting it only 1/4", it doesn't look like it's hanging out too far when looking at it from above. also, i set the gap around the tip at about 1/2" all around, so as not to see a big gap when looking from the rear.

crazy how much time and energy we spend on something as silly as an exhaust tip.

Thanks for the photos guys, that's precisely how I expect ( and want ) that tip to look. And I did buy the rolled version one from Paul, so hopefully once I install it, it'll fit just like the ones in the photos.

And then there's the lateral thrust mode for clowns that don't know the difference between a ball joint and a tailpipe collar...
