A Little V8 Motivation
#1

I contacted Powerhaus (thanks for the lead Bruce) and asked the question about final drive ratios for a V8 conversion to really be a satisfying conversion. Here's there answer (below). If anyone is thinking along these lines, let me know. I'm waiting on an answer back on the lowest ratio they can produce. If I go this way, I'm about 6 months away from plunking down $$ (with my move back East etc.) Any other takers?

"Eugene,

Thanks for clarifying. We have made some special tall ratio 5th and 6th

gear sets in the past for V8 applications however they were "one off" sets

and putting them on the shelf at the time didn't make sense as there were

just too few doing/requesting this. Currently we only market short/close

ratio 3rd/6th gear kit. We can certainly offer a custom tall ratio final

drive at a x1 price of $2990 or a x5 price of $2690 per if we can get group

purchase going. I would expect these to take at least 90 days to produce.

Regards,

Roger "

They better install it and lick my tranny clean for 3k! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

j/k of course, but a little steep for a gear don't you think? My thoughts were only to make the 6th gear taller and leave 1-5 stock. Is that what we are talking about here?

A change in the final ratio (ring and pinion) changes everything. This would make the entire 6 speed useable. Changing only 6th still leaves 1st and 2nd about useless. For driveability and enjoyment this would be the only way to go. Keep in mind that an LSD is in order as well. Ditto for a pinion bearing check. The LS7 will be released soon!

Yea Gene, that's the ticket. A new ring and pinion will change the whole box.

The Tiptronic has a 3.25 rear gear. I wonder if there is any way to swap that gear in. That would get you in the ballpark of usability.

Bob gave me a little math lesson last night...my dream of a LS7, corrected trans, etc. etc. will add up quickly. In fact, it makes the new 'Vette look like a bargain.
