A/C clutch
#1

the clutch is out on my ac compressor and i was wondering if there was anyway to replace just the clutch, and not the entire compressor. when my car was up at RS barn a while ago they said they clutch looked to be going out but the compressor itself was in fine shape. so is there anyone to replace just the clutch?

I bought a remanufactured compressor about five years ago from an outfit called Hancock Industries in Abilene, Texas, for $295. I just googled them, and they appear to still be in business. You might want to give them a shout; maybe they sell clutches separately. Good luck.

Yes you can change the clutch separately and I have a brand new one from Sunset that I bought and ended up not needing PM me if you decide to go that route. They charged me 300.00 + shipping so I will beat their price - duh.

Hello Joel et al.,

I've been following this thread with some interest. My a/c has lately been deciding for itself when to function.

Sat - a/c worked fine

Sun - a/c did not work

Mon (today) - a/c worked fine, again. When it worked today, I had the a/c switch in the "on" position prior to starting the car.

About a month ago, I started the car, began to pull out of the lot, and pressed the a/c button, found much more drag on the engine than normal - a/c seemed to have a bit of trouble, and made some noise before settling down.

Is this a symptom of a clutch going bad, or already gone? I called the Hancock Enterprises place mentioned above, and their price for a rebuilt unit is something like $545. Can this be the best deal going? The salesperson said she had to check to verify the availability and price and call me back.

Thanks for chiming in anyone with info - I hope that I am not hijacking the thread, but figured that I have a similar issue as Joel.

Well if it is the clutch then have I got a deal for you I have a brand new, from P in Germany. 944 126 923 01 for my 944 S2. I would imagine that is also the same number for a 968 - must confirm. Paid 500.00 and never needed it

Yours for 400.00 if you require the part.

Bump.

There doesn't seem to be an answer as to what the symptoms are for a bad A/C clutch. When I push the A/C button, it blows the 7.5A fuse in the heating/cooling circuit. Is this a clutch problem or maybe something else. Help! It's hot in Atlanta too.

If you unplug that wire and put a meter on it with the A/C button in, do you get volts, or blow the circuit? The clutch is easy enough to pull off and replace, you should be able to find one used.

Not sure what you mean by "that wire". I can turn the clutch by hand with the engine off so it's not frozen.

There is a connector on the wire to the compressor cluitch. I will be close to he compressor. May have to look up from the bottom. Unplug the wire and try the system. Obviously the A/C won't work with the wire unplugged but if it doesn't blow the fuse that way then the problem is with the clutch. Of course if it still blows the fuse then the clutch is not your problem.
