968 Solid trans mount
#1

Any of you other 968 guys running a solid trans mount in you race or DE car? Interested to know if any other modifications were needed other than the swapping the trans carrier.

Thanks.

not a lot of advantage there. the car is a torque tube car. there is no loss in power application from the trans mount. all it can do is transmit more noise and vibration.

if you want to limit lateral shift, install a heim link ended panhard rod.

I have put together the parts to complete the project, will post a short DIY when completed. We expect the same results that are produced when this project has been done on the 944, not for a street ride but positive results to a dedicated race car.

Cheers,

i'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish that a simple panhard rod would not do in a much simpler and more effective way. there isn't much vertical movement, and that isn't an issue anyway. limiting lateral movement can help with extreme tire sizes and such, but a solid mount won't help much there, as the direction of movement is in direction that such a mount helps with the least. a panhard rod would limit lateral movement, without compromising anything, and would be a lot more effective.

Solid transmission mount was the worst mod I ever did and the quickest to come back off. Very noisy and uncomfortable..

I have Lindsay solid transmission mount and ultra engine mounts. I think shifting feels better than it did previously, but the old mounts were in a tired state when I replaced them so anything new would have been better. It is noisier, but on a race car that's not an issue. Trouble free for me.

i tried the ultra mounts. i bent the threaded rod in less than 10 minutes. the vibration was way too much for a street car. if you changed the rod to a higher grade hardware, they would work for a race car.

as for the tranny mount, due to the design, there isn't really any improvement to be had. it's in the wrong direction to provide any real lateral resistance.

the thing that seems to be missed is that this is a torque tube car. the engine and drivetrain are completely locked together. they just don't move nearly as much as in a traditional layout, where solid mounts provide a better transfer of power, because they resist torque loss due to the engine twisting against the differential. in a torque tube car, mounts do almost nothing about that. all they can do is help resist lateral shift in a turn, and some minimal body shift.

a panhard bar in the rear would do a good job of holding the transmission centered. this would help prevent tire rub in a heavy turn.

solid mounts up front will help a little with engine movement, which will help a little with weight transfer under braking, but our engine doesn't move much, so don't expect a lot there.

new rubber mounts will do almost as much though. this is one of those things that is really more placebo than reality. frankly you would get more out of a better torque tube assembly.
