968 Connecting Rods
#21

ok - since 1R and 2R are suffixes on the casting numbers, and not the part numbers, what the heck are the two different part numbers?

what do you consider "extended high rpms"?

How do you know if you have early or late rods?

it goes by engine number and manufacturer date

"This is covered in Technical Bulletins, Book K, (PNA 000 082E)

Jan 1994 - Dec - 1994 page 11.

For the 968, "as of October 1, 1993, engine #42R0958 - #42R50621"

Changeover as of Oct 1 1993, engine numbers:

42 R 00 98 M44/43

42 R 50 621 M44/44

This is the non-desirable part number, as far as I know it was fitted to 944S2 and early 968:

944.103.112.1R or 944103112 1R

You can see some of the part number on the big end near the bolts, particularly the "1R"

I believe the later rod is 112.2R but I have not verified this.

These I believe are cast NA rods:

944.103.008.02

944.103.099.00

They are easy to spot as they have a year number cast into the beam near the big end.

Early 944 NA Forged rod, used in some 951s after 1986 I am told:

944 103 101 3R or 9441031013 RARST or 9441031013

1986 944 Turbo or 951 forged rod, found as late as 1989 in some motors:

944.103.110.0R or 9441031100 RARST or 9441031100

The 110.0 is supposed to be the most desirable stock rod. Both these and the 101.3 rods are easy to spot as they have the part number on the beam quite clearly debossed (not stamped.)
