968 asking prices
#1

Looking at the latest Panorama... hmm, at least the "asking prices" are fairly optimistic - 20 k ( ok, 19,994 )for one coupe, 25k for another coupe with MO30.. then there's a red coupe in So Cal for around 25K and that one was not an M030, just the basic model.. that ad from last month is gone so I wonder if it sold... not saying the sellers are getting the asking price, but it seems no one wants to part with these babies for a song anymore.. does this this mean we'll see basic cabs for $ 30k ?

Do you honestly believe what you wrote? Basic cabs will not go for 30k as long as you can get Boxsters for less. I love 968s but the market is driven by demand. Low demand will not yield high prices.

PCA members, both in Pano and in the online Mart, are famous for over-pricing their cars. I do not view these ads as any indicator of value, more of owners who love their cars and price them accordingly.

I too like to be optimistic about prices/values going up and I love my car, but if anyone wants to give me 30K for mine right now, bring it on ...then I can buy two more, perhaps with lower miles, since most decent offerings I see are around 15K or so! I'm guessing we won't see prices start to increase (if ever) is when they hit the 20 year mark or so...at least those that haven't been beat to death or have 200K plus on the odometer. It's such a wonderful automobile and they produced so few, so you gotta think we should be near the bottom right now.

again, I never said anyone will get those prices, just that owners' expectations seem to be higher than in the last couple of years and did not know if there was any reason for it other than optimistic overpricing.

as for " why buy a 968 cab for $ 30k, when you can get a boxster cheaper "... I wouldn't take a showroom boxster over average condition 968 if they were the last two cars on earth, but that's just me..

I think we should get 40 or so members to post their cars for sale on ebay for $35-40K.. THink about it...you see 40 968's for sale in about the same price range... then others might list them at the same range lol instant value increase

Clever, but I think that is considered a conspiracy...

Plus, what would you do if your car sold? (now that you drove the price up; good luck finding a good cheap one to replace it with )

They are just wasting their time while the potential buyers get the same car elsewhere for $10k less

this forum is interesting but I don't think we will see 968 sell for these high prices. I wish they would sell for this much I would sell mine and lok for a white one instead of Midnight Blue.

I saw an old Chrysler on Barrett Jackson sell for over $600,000.

I like the ebay idea, love my 968, but crave a Cayman.

I am in the process of buying a home, so right now..I'm lovin my 968!

What year and model was the Chrysler? I love the models from 1931 and 1932. They have running boards that are as long as a Boxster, and flat head, inline V-8's.

Just saw a '95 cab with 35,191 miles go for $20,889 on eBay.

Although I signed up for this forum two years ago, I'm only recently a regular on the forum....and appreciate all the great information, ideas, and help that's out there! Look forward to talking with you all.

For what it's worth, I bought my '92 968 on eBay two years ago for $18K and I still believe it was/is worth every penny. Love that car. Just turned 52,000 miles last night. She was in great condition when I bought her, and I've invested several thousand in it just to keep her looking and feeling young -- new top to just spiff her up, fixed LOTS of little leaks (gaskets, hoses, etc all over the place), new speakers and sound system, standard maintenance, and minor cosmetic surgery (repair scratches and remove yellowed stoneguards). Not sure what she's worth officially, but she's in truly pristine condition with great engine (2% on all cylinders on leak down test) and transmission, and exceptional paint and interior. I did it all as a labor of love, and don't expect to get all the money back (if heaven forbid I ever sold her), but she's worth $20-25K to me...for an exotic, rare, and fun car. A real head turner and conversation starter....several people have asked if she's a new model this year! (OK, not from hard core Porschefiles, but....)

when it comes to a commodity which is rare, as is the case with 968s, the value is dictated almost entirely by any given buyer's discretion and the extent of his/her patience ( lack thereof, actually..) not by the typical market value of what similar cars may be going for.. if someone wants a horizon blue 968 cab with less than 50k miles, they may spend $ 35k to get it, regardless of the fact that they can buy three 968 coupes in red, white and black, or two other cabs with 90k mi on the odo, or opt for a near mint condition boxster s instead, for the same amount of money. perhaps that does not reflect the majority of people out there, but for those of us with OCD, this makes perfect sense.

Hey Scott,

Sorry I don't remember any details, they had tons of old cars going through the auction and they all fetched unbeleivable amounts of money!

I would guess then, and say "Imperial", or "Waterhouse Imperial".
