968 article in the latest Panorama
#1

Excellent write up in the latest Pano on Raj Matta's Turbo S replica. I have seen the car at Hershey and it is really nice and very fast. Some good words for the 968 in the article.

while he has taken some liberties with parts, yet claims to be a "replica", he has paid attention to a lot of detail, and used a lot of the original parts. certainly shows tenacity, especially after the car burned down. i wonder if the car idles properly yet? that was something he was wrestling with for a long time.

always good to see our cars featured in the press though.

The red interior does'nt do it for me.

Overall the car is nice, but was it worth the time and trouble?

Raj Matta ? :-) surely must be a typo, lol, so it's Raj Datta's car in Pano ? Cool. These cars are starting to get more and more attention in the media lately, it seems. So the factory production series ( if you can call it a "series", lol..) was comprised of only 6 turbo s , and 4 turbo RS 968s ?

The red leather interior looks better in person. The pic doesn't do it justice!

I have to see what shade of red you guys are talking about.. I think some of the very dark ( and muted ) reds - wine, cordovan, burgundy, - can be really nice, but it also depends on the exterior color with which they are paired. Any contrast that's too stark such as a bright red interior with a white or with yellow car is certainly not to my taste either. But again, all subjective. At least his car does not have the Club Sport painted wheels in red does it ?! Sorry, that's where the " subjective " argument stops LOL , when the wheels are the same color of the car's paint, that's just plain tacky IMO and makes the car look like an driving billboard for M&M candy. With all due apologies to all our members who have CSs , of course, but ...seriously ?!

lol - i think red interior is fine in a cadillac with fuzzy dice and a fur dash cap. wine/burgandy color is expected for a buick or oldsmobile. red interior just says "sleezy" and/or "old" to me (lol - so you'd think i'd really like it). i was looking at a Z4 the other day, again considering that car, but it was white and had a red interior, and i didn't even want to drive it. the combination just looked bad. it's the only one in the area with an automatic, so i'll probably go back and drive it, but no chance i'd buy it.

the only exceptions i can think of were cars that were both silver and convertible (67 vette and a 550 spyder). in both cases, i think the car was really making up for the interior though, and it probably could have been big pink polka dots for all the difference it would have made.

Personally I love the red interior and is my color choice on white or silver fun time cars.

ds so you don't like my car huh? I didn't get the huggy bear feeling at the swap meet for this interior. Now I did lose in the concours last yea rto a blue 928 with gold wheels. Huggy must have been walking around! So geez, when I strip my carpet out and just have a red floor please don't call me huggy or bear!

I saw Raj's car in various stages of rebuilding, a number of years ago. It was on jack stands for a long time, but I haven't seen it or Raj in years. I never engaged in a project of that magnitude, but I can attest to the patience and tenacity required to do things like this on the 968's. Tip of the hat to him.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of having Raj work on my car. He rebuilt the head among other things and the car never ran better. At the time, this car was up on blocks and in talking to him you knew immediately that he is a perfectionist, a die hard 968'er, had a fantastic knowledge of our cars, and that the car, when finished, would be spectacular and it is! Glad to see the car and Raj getting the recognition they deserve. As far as the color, to each his own. I prefer black and cashmere but appreciate the likes of others. Great Job Raj!!!

lol - glad it worked out for you, but there are an awful lot of stories of less than stellar experiences with him, from bad business deals, to accusations of theft. i can't prove any of them one way or the other, but the list is long enough to caution me against ever doing business with him. after hearing about how he burned up his car, i wouldn't let him touch one of mine.

the guy was a complete ass hat when i flew across the country to an event in newtown, had 3 people try to introduce us, which he refused, and finally i walked up myself to meet him, and he held out his hand in the "stop" stance and refused. everyone was shocked and in utter disbelief. i've never seen such a ridiculous lack of social grace. he pulled another lame stunt like that one year in hershey, and whined like a baby to don because i was in a borrowed boxster, and parked in line waiting for the caravan to take off to the swap meet.

I let my PCA membership expire. Anyone care to scan that article and post it here? I'd love to read about that car. White on red is my favorite color combo. Had a white on red S2000 once upon a time. It's nice to see interior colors other than black and tan.

we don't allow unauthorized posting of things like that. it's a copyright infringement.

as expected, it's a puff piece, with no specific information (like the build sheet or even information as to where to get the real turbo s build sheet). reads like the author was a buddy. nice to see the car in the press, and raj certainly deserves credit for tenacity, but not a lot of substance in the article.

yeah - he had permission for that stuff. there are a few things here like that. however, pca is pretty nutty about copyright stuff, as are a couple of magazines. consequently we are very careful about what goes up going forward. basically we have to wait 10 years before thinking about putting something up without having problems. definitely can't put up anything currently on the stands.
