951 vs 968
#21

Michelle, it will be fun to see what car you find yourself driving more when you have the two.

I have a 944S that is a little more like a turbo in that the power band is up top and is harder to drive fast without running it hard. When I bought the 968, I don't think I drove the "S" for months after. It is just better rounded around town or even on the open road. It doesn't hurt that the 968 is a cab either.

I will tell you this, I would most surely trade my 951 for my 968 any day of the week. The 968 is so much easier to drive around town. It handles much better (m030), looks a HELL of a lot better, nobody knows what it is and you never see yourself coming and going. Never. I just took it for a drive on the local twisty road that nobody frequents. Talk about fun! You can stay in the powerband and not drive like an idiot. Hard to do that with my 951 which had a Vitesse Stage III turbo. The 968 won't win any freeway blasts, but I'm getting to old and responsible to ever do that. My two cents....

I agree that 968s have a more refined, cleaner modern look and are a great car to drive, even without M030. But there is something special about a Porsche with the word "turbo" on the back. 951s are also pretty rare, only 25000 made, about twice the number of 968s, and of those only 7500 were Turbo S spec cars. And if Porsche owners only bought cars purely on driving capabilities why would anyone buy an early 911 over a front engined model. I'm not discouraging buying 968s, I love mine, but looking after a 951 for while would be special too.

I owned a 1990 944 Turbo (250 BHP) back in 2000 and I absolutely adored that car. Today after having owned a 3.2 Carrera cabriolet, a 964 Carrera 4, a 356B coupe and also a 968. The 944 Turbo is still my favorite. I have added a picture of my lost love :-(

The 968 would be my DD. My 951 is HEAVILY modded and is not an everyday car.

I love the 951 but I could never trade my 968 for one. Although call me old fashioned but the old square headlights of the 944 model please me a lot more than the 968's goggly frog eyes.

i'm not a fan of the lights when they are up on the 944, but i do like the more aggressive look of the front end when they are down - it's much more "all business" and a lot less "decorative" - conversely, the lights on the 968 in the up position bug me less - i think it's a "square line" thing - i'm so fickle

i think the white cab with the 968 rear end and the S2 front end is just gorgeous - i think i would probably rework the fenders though to eliminate the pop-ups, and install lights in the front bumper cover, but i'm not sure

funny how the lights on these cars, be it 944 or 968, seem to be the point at which people take issues

I think I feel the same way as you Flash. when the lights are up on the 944 it makes it look like a robot looking at you. but when they are down they look so so nice and mysterious.
I also am crazy about the S2 front end. I just love the way it looks, it's the best.
Yeah the lights are really important because they can give the car a different personality. I am fascinated by 944-968 designs

My future plans for Anita (my 951) include adding a new header panel that goes from fender to fender eliminating the pop-ups. I will then put smoked plexiglass on the edges and hide HID's in there. Hopefully you won't see them behind the dark glass, but they'll be bright enough to shine through keeping the lines of the car with the lights down, but getting even better illumination. We'll see when I finally get there

Unfortunately as said earlier, shame the 951 cab wasn't imported here. If it were, I'd own one (instead of needing an S2 cab and 968 cpe.) IMO, the ultimate would have been 968 cab with an S2 face - unfortunately, it never happened.

I've owned an '86 951 that was heavily modified, as well as an '89 that was somewhat modified into a track car, and my 94 968 drives better than either of them. It is much more balanced, even more so after I added the turbo cup suspension to it. The turbo rush is a great feeling, as was shooting flames out the exhaust of the 86, but for everday driving and reliability, the 968 wins hands down. Plus it looks waaaaay better.

Well in the end I decided not to buy this particular 951. A few things worreid me and I was convinced by some wiser heads that I could do better for the money. Tough decision! I'm still looking. There's a nice 928 GT for sale...
