'95 993

I will buy no car before it's time. It's time, now. First, some history. It's long but it might be fun and it explains my current state of mind.

I've always wanted a Carrera or a 911 or whatever they have been called at the time. My love affair with them really started while I was in college when I really couldn't afford to buy anything. A friend of my brother had a '67 911S in the days when everyone else around us had muscle cars and pony cars and hot rods. To set the stage and the time, this was in the '67 to '70 days of yore. I know many of you were not yet born but, trust me on this, they really did have cars back then.

Anyway, I had the sports car bug--or GT bug, if that's your naming prefrence. I found a '63 TR3 I could afford and drove it through most of my college years and for a short time thereafter. A couple of friends bought MGAs and another bought an MGB. We were cool, man.

After college, when I had a real job and real paycheck, I wanted a Porsche but the paychecks weren't big enough. So, I bought a 240Z and drove it around for a while until I finally bought my first Porsche. I really, really wanted the 911 but still couldn't afford it. It seemed that no matter how much my paychecks grew, the window sticker on a 911 grew faster. My first Porsche was a 1.7L 914. It was terribly under-powered, as we all know, but it was really cool. I loved that car.

I traded it for a Buick but I'd rather not talk about that misguided mishap. I only bring it up because I knew I'd blown it right away, the new Porsche 924 had been introduced the year before and they were affordable. Yeah, I still really wanted the brand new, hot of the Stuttgart factory floor 911 SC but that still wasn't in the budget. The 924 was in the budget but after driving one, I didn't like it. I was bummed out about it and bought 280Z but I still wanted a 911.

To cut to the chase, the 944 and later the 968 were cars I did like and I've been driving my 968 coupe for about 7 years. It's a great, great car........but I've still always wanted a 911. Specifically, when the 993 was released I fell in love. By then the pay checks had finally grown faster than the window sticker, I had my pen in hand ready to buy one in '95 but just couldn't pull the trigger. I couldn't justify spending that much money, even though I had it.

Now, it's time. I've been looking around for a couple of years and found the one I want. It's a '95 Carrera six-speed coupe in Guards Red with tan interior and lots of options and tasteful upgrades, including suspension, brakes, exhaust, chip, wheels, etc.--all the things I'd want to do if it hadn't already been done. I'm flying up to Chicago next weekend and driving it to its new home in North Carolina, barring any last minute glitches.

On a sad note, I won't be keeping my 968. I thought about keeping it for my son, who'll be driving in three years, but came to my senses after thinking about giving that much car to a brand new sixteen-year-old driver. Bad idea. It's time for it to move to a new home with a new owner to love and care for it. It's still a great car and it's going to make someone very happy for a long time. I'll be listing it on the Forum, so tell all your friends and neighbors to take a look.

I'll still be lurking around on the forum from time to time. You are like family. It's been a great ride.

Sincere regards,

Duckman

p.s. If for any reason the purchase of my "new-to-me" 993 doesn't happen, never mind.

... and the mortgage payments, and the kids' education, and the taxes, etc, etc... That's why I got a 16 year-old 968. It's still the only good Porsche in my budget. FWIW I agree with you about the 16-year old with a 968. My kid really has the bug now, thanks in large part to the wonderful folks on this forum (the Orgtega fun run was his initiation to what a really good car feels like) and he desparately wants a 944 to fix up. I'm trying to talk him into something sub 2.0L - he is getting interested in Miatas - a much tamer ride.

The 993 is my fav 911 as well. Looks like a well bought car. Enjoy Duckman!

rxter, FWIW, my wife had one of the original Miatas and she let me drive it every once in a while. It was an awesome little car. We finally sold it because we had too many cars around the house but we both loved it. However, when the time comes for my son to start driving, and a few years later my daughter, I plan to get something like a Honda Fit.

Beautiful 911 - The 993 and the 997 are my two favorite incarnations of this iconic car. We'll miss your insights and contributions to this forum (your description of the credit crisis is still the best one I've ever read). Thanks, and best of luck.

Way to go finding a 1995 model [which is the best year for the standard 993 IMO] w/ sport seats! I fully intend the 993 to be my next step in the Porsche progression a few years from now.

I'd hold off on that purchase until you get a PPI done. I noticed in your pictrures the engine is in the wrong place, doesn't a real Porsche have the engine in the front?

All the best and enjoy your new,non 50-50 rear engine challenge!

Wow Duckman !

Tremendous find and best of luck. Couldn't you just keep a roller in the garage so that you will still be inclined to participate here. Maybe if your son spent the next 3 years restoring a 968 he would be less inclined to bend it later.

Your story is very much the same as mine Rx-7, Rx-7 convertibe, MR-2, Miata...I just got stuck at 968.

You are always welcome here regardless of your ownership status !

Regards,

Jay

Jay, I left my RX7 and Miata out of the story but they're great cars.

Thanks.

Duckman,

Congrats!!!!

Classic Guards Red over Tan.....absolutely perfect Porsche color combo (my 2 cents).

Heated Sport Seats, 996 3-Spoke Steering Wheel, yup! very nice options

I'm a big fan of the MY 1995 993 as it's the only MY with OBD1 (you'll never have to deal with the variety of "fault" codes that come with OBD2 equipped 993s!!!). While the "variocam" update adds 18 hp (MY 1996- MY 1998), the 95s feel quicker by my butt.

Enjoy!!!!

My choice as well. 1995 is the best year for the 933. For me it is postponed a bit, but I still can't help looking for my polar silver cab, black on black 993. My 968 cab will stay with me as a truely special car and I am sure that it will one day be in the hands of my eldest son.

In order for this change to be approved by the 968 enthusiasts, you will need to stop by the Philly area on your way back from Chi-town. I will drive your new 993 for a few days and let you know if it is OK to finally leave the 968 fold....

Although guards red is perhaps my least favorite Porsche color (on any model), your 993 looks amazing! I lurk on the Rennlist 993 forum a lot. Those guys seem to be a good group and really care about the model.

If the time ever comes, I too would like to have a 993. Happens to be one of my favorite Porsches all time! The time for me, however, will be when I can keep the 968 and have a 993 as well.*

*- Probably won't happen in my lifetime.

What a great story. I can feel your excitment leaping off of my screen! Nothing like actually grabbing hold of your dream. I'm happy for ya. I think waiting was a wise choice. Be sure to go easy when you first start whipping her around. Those RR set ups do handle different in the bends.

.02- I understand the simple/pure design of the 911 dash but every time I see it I feel as though the center between the shifter and the dash should be filled in with a radio or a screen or something!

i completely agree! that is high on my list of things that make me think of it like a bug - i just can't get away from how much all of the 911s, particularly the air cooled ones, remind me of that car

i have learned that i am a front engine rear drive guy, and that's all there is to it

but, that is a clean one, and with the odd exception of the 968, i like red
