$ 9,000 for a meal
#21

I lived in NYC for 27 years. The old Homestead is one of the oldest steak joints in NYC near what use to be the meat market. While it is one of the oldest it is also one of the worst ones that exist in NYC. It had to be for charity.

Yea, you're are missing something : taste buds, lol ! But seriously, give it another try, maybe your last experience was a fluke , they're fairly consistent . Perfectly fresh and crisp ingredients, the buns are perfect ( reminds me of ..oh never mind, this will go way off topic if I bring that up ..) , top quality meat , but keep in mind we're talking in relative terms, this is a chain so you won't get Kobe beef, but otherwise it's about as good as it gets, and the so-called secret menu is not that big of a secret ; they have two variances essentially : you can have your burger grilled in mustard sauce and with carmelized onions on top ( aka " animal style " ) or wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun, ( aka " protein burger " ) .

they just seemed small and fried. maybe i'll give them another shot. i'm looking for something substantial though. even wendy's is small, but at least they use full leaf lettuce. burger king is better size, and flame broiled, which i think has more flavor, but shredded lettuce. carl's is pretty good, but take forever for some reason.

i don't eat at those chains often. we have a better burger joint close by.

Give me a $4.99 Costco rotisserie chicken over any of the burger restaurants. That would leave me $9995.01 in change to buy another 968!

Chain places like in-n-out burger or chipotle, or subway, which I do think are the best of their respetctive genre, would still not be anything I would go to unless there was nothing better around for miles and I had a craving at the time for a quick burger, or a burrito, etc..( which does happen on occasion ) but I really wish I could drink a beer while sitting down and munching on one of those meals..it's a pain to get the meal as take out and then drive around looking for a place that sells wine or beer and eat in the car :-) :-) .the food gets cold. Although I've done that as well, lol.

As for the $ 9,000 meal, my thoughts were the same as paulzebo's post . But I suspect anyone who shelled out that kind of money for a dinner , even if it was just a one time charity thing, probably does not think about the 968 you could buy instead , and drove to the restaurant in their Rolls, or Bentley, or Maybach, or were chauffeured in a limo, to dine there. The bus boys or dish washers at Old Homestead on the other hand , may look up to 968s as a dream car and think of the foolish patrons inside spending that hefty sum of money for something they'll " recycle " down the toilet in a few hours...

Yeah, I've done that once or twice . Not proud of it, but in the event of roadway emergencies like that, as I said - a man' s gotta have a beer with his burger !

I always knew you were different. I'd be concerned I would be taking a sip of my beer to wash down some fries and the pool lees would pull up next to me and say." Yo mofo you be drinking a beer in yo car?"

In Ca it's against the law to have any open container of alcohol in your car, although I understand there are a few states where that's not only legal, but there are drive-through places where you can just pull up, buy a beer or wine, and then be on your way sipping it...as long as you stay under the DUI limit.. I recall someone said Texas is one of those states , not sure about which other ones.

Anyway, beer is food ; it's made with hops, hops are the flowers of plants, so very similar to a vegetable since veggies are produced by plants, so in essence beer is one of the major food groups . Then again so is any alcohol which uses grains .. So if the poo-lice pull you over, you just say : " what ? I'm eating ! "

Ok, now I’m seriously pissed ! First, Kaliforniastan banned my beloved foie gras , but thankfully after a few years of legal battles, I can at least buy it from out of state and have it shipped here legally ( allowable for personal consumption, you can’t serve it at restaurants though ) Still, a small victory since it was previously banned completely from entering the state ) . But now, this is war !! It’s possible BACON will be a very rare commodity attainable here, as a measure designed to ban any inter-state bacon sales from other states ( 70% comes to us from Iowa ) which do not “ improve the treatment of pigs “ will prohibit any wholesale business in that domain. And the rest is bound to increase the cost by easily 100%, at grocery stores, etc. But the availability/ shortages is the greater concern . WTF  ?!   Oh, just great, can’t wait for the tasty CA breakfast : eggs ( unless they’ll ban anything from not free-range chickens next ), hash browns, and KALE or TOFU in lieu of bacon . Sorry, had to vent , as I’m grilling hamburgers with bacon in about an hour ..

Bacon is no good for you. Clearly you and many other Californians have shown the state that it needs to make decisions for you. The state is much better equipped across the board to make your decisions. Just sit back and enjoy while counting your lucky blessings.

Bacon is not good for us ?!   Listen buddy , every time I try to eat “healthy” foods,  along comes Thanksgiving , Christmas, Easter , most other holidays , or weekends..or Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and ruins my healthy regime plans !  ^_^

Geez, sarcasm is lost on the aged. Don’t read those progressive tomes telling you what you need to eat. Again government bureaucrats are much more knowledgeable and better equipped to tell you what to do. Listen to them.

I eat anything I want in moderation, for goodness sake I'm only here once and I will make the most of it

I have always heard that Knowledge is Power, France is Bacon. Still have no idea what that means.

The next thing to look forward to is the stream of Californians coming over the hill to my little burg to purchase bacon. The Cabelas on the I-80 about a mile into Nevada offloads a pallet of ammunition every couple of days, and it is gone within hours, heading back over the Sierra to California. The parking lot is literally filled with CA plates on ammo days.

Anyone want to invest in a bacon dispensary in Stateline? It sounds like a sure thing!
