I just saw the (American) evening news and saw a story about a "pivate" section of toll highway with a legal speed limit of 85 MPH! It is about 41 miles long in the area of Austin and San Antonio. I would like to have a stretch around here that had a higher speed limit. I hope the quality of the road in question is worthy of the spped limit!

For those 968 ownwrs in that area, please post your reactions when you get to take your 968 out for a spin...

lol - i look at this as social darwinism of a sort. those who are capable of driving that speed will be fine. those who aren't will die in the higher speed crash and filter themselves out of the gene pool.

85 is nothing, in our teens my brother and I went to Germany. Our Uncle picked us up at the train station in Munchen (Munich) and clipped home for a solid hour at 200 kph (125 mph) without batting an eye. Upon arrival, I was glad that Germany also has toilets.

85 would be great, but yeah. When I was stationed in Frankfurt, my commute on the autobahn was about 5 or 6 miles. I usually had to be in around 5:30am, so there weren't many people on the road. covered that stretch in about 3 minutes. It was a blast.

Sure 125 mph (200 km) would be great, but for us that live in fear of exceeding 65 or 70 mph because of the (tax collecting) police, then a legal drive at a brisker pace would be nice once in a while.

on hwy 280 here, the typical speed is 80 mph ; 75% + of the cars usually drive at around that mark all the time..and quite a few are near the triple digit mark ) but I don't see all that many tickets being handed out.. so I wonder if the unspoken "tolerance" is around 20 - 25 mph on 65 limit highways ( assuming the conditions are deemed not too dangerous by the police ) However, I would doubt that treshold is the same if the posted speed limit is up to 85, I'd bet that treshold drops to anything over 5 mph or so above the new limit and if you go 90+ you will likely get a ticket ! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Here in Victoria the open road limit is 100k (about 62mph). Police have a very sneaky moving mode radar in their patrol cars which will get you if they are coming towards you as well as when you are going in the same direction. On the open road they will give you a tolerance of about 5k only.



BUT, if you are more than 25k over the limit, there is a mandatory one month suspension of your licence; between 35 and 45 k over, 6 months off the road; more than 45k over, 12 months. All automatic and un-arguable unless you take the matter to court and succeed in having the speed read down. Even if the circumstances show that the speed was not wildly unsafe the court has no power to change the loss of licence once the speed is established. The only way to stretch our cars is by taking a chance or going to a track.

MAN I sure wish it was 85MPH in Virginnia!! I got a ticket for doing 84 in a 70 MPH zone <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/whine.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I was just flowing with the traffic cars were passing me! Yesterday was a beautiful sunny (cool) autumn day and my insurance runs out in a few days, so... I took the afternoon off and went for a 200 + mile cruise with my wife in WA state.

We drove for awhile on I-5 heading south, where the seed limit is 70 mph. The condition of some lanes on that hwy are so horrible that at that speed it can be considered dangerous to drive at the speed limit!

There were some stretches that I was doing 80 and the current topic of 85 mph came to mind. Truth be told, 85 is NOT that fast when you are driving a 968 on a decent highway.

The biggest peeve of mine is the drivers that cruise along at the speed limit in the "fast" lane. They seem to think that because they are doing the "max" they do not need to move over. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/glare.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I learned a bit about this problem (in traffic school a year ago for a red light camera ticket -- whole nother story about those stupid things).



In California the left lane (always the left-most lane) is called the "passing lane". Vehicles may only use that lane if they are passing, it is not to be used for just driving. That lane is totally reserved for passing, and if a vehicle isn't passing then they are not legal. Even if they are doing the max speed limit it is not OK to drive in this lane unless they are "passing". Now I've never heard of anyone actually getting a ticket for this behavior, but I agree, it sure is annoying.



Here is another tidbit:

- What is the maximum speed limit on a road in California?

- Answer: The maximum is not the posted number! The maximum speed limit is that speed at which driving is safe.

Therefore under inclement weather or hazard conditions the maximum speed is actually lower than the posted number, and you can get a ticket for going too fast even if you are under the posted number.



- How is the maximum speed determined?

- No! You can't determine what the maximum safe speed is! The maximum safe speed is determined by an officer who is observing your driving under those inclement or hazard conditions. So in bad weather, you may slow down to what you think is safe, but you can still get a ticket if an officer determines you are exceeding what he thinks is the maximum safe speed!



Ha-ha, they'll get you one way or another!

Just realized that's the highway I'll be driving to and from the F1 ( I'm staying in Round Rock and driving to the track venue that weekend ) . I'll be in a boring rental car so no concerns for me, but with the new 85 mph limit, I wonder how many cops will be poised along the highway on race days to hand out speeding tickets to all those drivers who are just coming off a major octane high , top speed blood infusion and planting an extra heavy foot on that gas pedal , going far faster than 85 mph before they see the flashing lights...

85 in a straight line cannot be categorized as " fast " ( in these cars ) by any stretch of the term. " fast " in a straight line barley starts at approx 120 . IMO

I really understand that! I am just saying that the high speed limits are on straight line roads. No matter if the speed limit was 120 or 150 that to me is not an exciting ride. I have had my share of high HP cars in my 52 years on this planet. I have tripped triple digit speeds (180 is my top) more times then needed on the public roadways for which is very stupid but you tend to do things in your younger days that are very stupid. I have paid my share of speeding tickets and have been thrown in jail and car impounded. I have also lost my license for 1 year as a fast driving stupid young man. I could write a small book on fast driving on the public roads. I like twisty roads, that to me is were the excitement is. To go fast straight is more up to the machine to go fast and on a road course is more driver then car. I have gone through Barber and Bondudurant schools in my twenties to hone my driving skills and to appreciate the art of driving the cars I have owned. I am old and don't need the speed that I once needed in my hobby cars. That is why I have driven a 944S2 for the last 5 years and now my 968. These cars live on curvy roads and not going straight. They do what they were designed for extremely well! This just MY opinion and my opinion only. We are all different in what we like and age tends to make you think differently. I meant no disrespect to any one in my opinion. That is not what I am about.



Another thing to consider for a 85 mph speed limit are the other drivers. Most of the people on this forum are students of driving their cars to the limit with control. I am NOT saying 85 is the limit of these little cars we own! I would feel safe with driving fast with most of the members here but do you really want to be on a public road with a speed limit of 85 for which many drivers will creep up to 90 or higher. Most of them are not capable of keeping their concentration and focus on the road, what's around them and what's coming up on them. I can see a driver going 85 and their phone rings and instead of just leaving it alone they go to answer it loose focus and we see an accident. how would you like to be going along at 90 and some guy is in the slow lane doing 60 or so then accidently swerves into your lane. I don't worry about my driving. I can drive fairly well for not being a professional race driver, but we can't control the other drivers!



I'm sorry for the long rebuttal but sometimes I can ramble. My wife will give me the evil eye when we are with friends and we are leaving and I am still talking, lol.

I agree 100% ! My comment was exclusively applicable to the 968, in capable hands, going 85mph in a straight line and with little or no traffic around. And I definitely think you gain far greater appreciation of our car's remarkable capabilities by pushing it to its limits in turns than you do going fast just straight, but I still get an adrenaline rush hitting its top end, even if it's sustained for no more than a few

seconds out of fear of being "noticed" by a radar , with each second that passes..

I was on that stretch of road on Texas last December and it was pretty boring. Cruised at 90-95 and straight but good for making the drive shorter. They just increased the limit on I-80 here in Utah to 80 last month. Great for making my commute shorter.

I have slowed down since starting my DE experience as I realize how unsafe so very many drivers are. This is not to say I don't drive fast but my ocular perception has increased and has made me more attentive and wary. I suspect we all appreciate what our cars can do in the proper environments and look for those areas to enjoy our cars in. I do and am blessed to live in an area where they are literally everywhere.

JWS if you can't talk among friends, even if you are boring them, what's it all about.
