2002 M Coupe
#1

I have developed a certain affinity for the 2001-02 BMW M coupe and have an opportunity to purchase a low miles, all-original example. The price point on the S54 engine examples seems to be high 20s. Most people with <40k examples are asking $32-36k but I don't think this is realistic considering the asking price new was around $44k. I'm willing to pay $28k for a low miles example and I've seen some go for less than this but it usually involves a seller that doesn't quite know the pedigree and provenance of their exact model. With only 690 in the US for those two production years, I'm thinking this could be the BMW to collect from this era. What do you think? Does anyone here own one? Have you driven one?

You may want to check bimmerforums.com for more info on this topic. Most of the BMW enthusiasts I know hang out there.

Nice running vehicle but IMHO it is not a good looking car. An old shoe on 4 wheels.

yup - even the new one, while better, still looks odd to me

solid runner though, and you can definitely whip it around, albeit feeling a LOT less sure of itself than the 968

i went and checked out the new cab, and it does not look as good in person as it did in the pictures - very disappointed there

That's a shame. It sure is nice looking in pictures.

yeah - i was pretty bummed - lots of cool stuff crammed in there, but a totally useless car - not fast enough to be enough fun to be the primary toy car, and not enough practical things to make it a daily driver

almost no trunk space (my mgb trunk was bigger), nothing behind the seats - very tough to justify the use - the 968 cab is better suited for the weekend jaunt

it falls short in power (even the turbo model), and is WAY too heavy for that size of car - performance specs are decent, but there are quicker cars out there for the same money

the upside is that the cockpit is lain out pretty well - the car feels good sitting in it, and most everything is right where you want it (though i could do without the i-drive right in my way)

i prefer the previous hood, but like the smoother side lines - the ducktail still bugs me, but is a lot more subdued than before - the over all look is better by far, but still looks too stubby - the car should have been 4 inches longer at the wheelbase - that would have given a smoother sleeker line, and also added some room behind the seats

oh well
