I also noticed the new 997 based GT3 in both Panorama and Excellence (which had the GT3 on the cover). Jeez, even in white, the new GT3 is absolutely stunning.
When it comes to 911s, I'm a die-hard "air-cooled" fan. Before the 996 came along, Porsche made so many tempting variants. My favs being all the 964s when the car market was slow.
During this time, Porsche offered one-off 964s such as the RS America, America Roadster, Speedster (my personal fav), the wide-bodied Carrera 4, a 3.3 liter turbo and the last of the rear-wheel-drive-only turbos, the 3.6 Turbo and 3.6 Turbo S (oh mama!).
As far as the 993 goes, I have a huge soft spot for the 1997 1/2 - 1998 C2S (a turbo-bodied Carrera 2). Lightweight, rear wheel drive only, with a gorgeous FAT ass. In my opinion the best looking rear end I've even seen on any car.
For me the 996 was a huge let done. Literally a "lease" type car (e.g., nothing that I'd want to buy and own for 10-20 years). As Porsche dilegently set about making a better 911 every year after. Just to make you feel the need to upgrade right after making a purchase.
However, I whole-heartedly agree that the 996 GT2 and GT3s are fantastic (and endearing), 911s. These two models have already gained a large following and will undoubtedly age very well.
Even though I'm not much of a 996 fan, I do like (and would love to own), both the GT2 and GT3s. That said, the new 997 GT3 is being touted as an improved version of the 996 iteration; and the upcoming 997 GT2 will also be a stunning performer.
All great cars. But for me, my favorite Porsches of all time are our "perfect" 968s and the giant-killing Carrera GT.
My 2 cents,
Porsche
