And the seminar has been canceled. The coupe has been washed and cleaned and vacuumed. But I still might bring the cab. I fixed the hatch (finally) and it now works like it did when it was new. First time since I bought it in 2004. Tip - try to roughly line up the latches before you close the hood with the mounting bolts loose, otherwise, they slide and then jam the hood closed. I had to crawl in the truck and wiggle the latch to get the hood opened again. 30 years ago, that contortion would have been water cooler talk. Now, well....

Darryl and Christine met Melva and I in Hershey to check out the hotel and the restuarant...you folks are in for a treat. Don't forget swimsuits since the hotel has a pool and hot tub open until 11 PM.

We also ran the fun run route...Darryl designed a very challenging, technical course filled with lots of "Porsche" roads. Great scenery and a few opportunities to open it up.

3 weeks and counting...

Need checks for dinner by the 17th, please don't wait until the last minute.

well, i should hope so - i'd hate to think i was going to drive 6000 miles just so i could listen to somebody piss and moan about me parking at the end of a line of 968s with a borrowed boxster (at least i was at the end when i parked there - more 968s showed up AFTER me), then drive at a snail's pace, get lost because nobody set up a sag wagon, and then go and look at a bunch of rusty 914 parts, and then go home - been there done that - lol

this will be the best one i have attended - i can tell already

Well I am going to bring my white coupe instead of the convertible. Reasoning is -

1. can't win longest distance - west coast guys have that one.
2. can't win best condition car (coupe or cab).
3. can't win most money spent on repairs and upkeep (but I might come in second!).
4. can't win most modified (guess who?).

but might win one of three new categories ...

1. first car to show up with snow tires! Yes, Quebec can be a bit of a chance in April.
2. car from Canada with most miles (prob have about 210,500 by the time I get there).
3. car with most bugs on the front clip on arrival (entomologists can take samples as needed).

Although there are lots of turns, I thought the route was pretty darned good considering I don't live around there and did it all by terrain maps and Google Earth!! Long curves, tight curves, hills, and straights...what's not to like. Once we corrected a couple of the left/right turn misprints in the automatically generated directions, we found out it does indeed work to get us out and back to the hotel.

I am seriously considering arriving early on Friday morning and re-running the route to mark a few of those goofy corners with flourescent orange signs or something! Consider this a formal warning for everyone...there are a few places where roads change names and you'll need to pay attention. We will discuss more at our driver's meeting Sunday morning.

Upon return home yesterday evening, I re-ran the route on-line and retyped and verified the turn by turn directions to make sure everything was correct and made note of a few landmarks, etc. I think this will turn out to be a blast...just remember to stay out of the cow pastures!

i'm really looking forward to this - i can't believe how much work it has been though to prep for it

but, this "shill-fest" (lol - too funny) for our products and the website will be a lot of fun, and i'm sure worth all the effort

i do love though that a couple of sour grapes individuals are bent that others stepped up to sponsor or support the event, and bring some things to the table that would have otherwise been left out

no good deed goes unpunished

no worries - if there are some who can't get past their own little personal grudges and be adults, that's fine - we don't need that kind of childish attitude, and we are better off without those people anyway - let them stay home or grumble in the corner

this is going to be, by far, the best celebration yet, with a much better layout of events, and something for everybody - the addition of the fun run is a huge improvement - the tailgate party will be a blast - the mini concours extending to saturday works great too, as does moving the dinner to saturday - every change this year is an improvement

yesterday is gone - this is the way of the future - those running the event this year are not going away, and neither is the likelihood of their involvement in the future - people need to get used to it and get over it, or step up and do this themselves, and stop pushing it off onto somebody else, and then complaining when they don't get their way

much credit and cudos to the committee this year - a committee was clearly the better way, and i know how much work and effort it has been for them - good job guys

Keep up all the hard work! I hope that the 968 Celebration at Hershey 2010 turns out to be a spectacular event! Because of my daughter's wedding, I am unable to go this year, but I want this years event to cause momentum for next year's event, which I plan to attend!

I too concur that Jeff, Jim, Jay, Kathy and Darryl should be thanked for agreeing to host this year's event since otherwise there would be no 968 Celebration at Hershey this year.

On the comments about this being the "best year" and that previous years were not that good - be careful, yours truly did not host all of the last 9 968 Celebrations. Cosimo and Randi hosted a spectacular event in Reston, VA during 2005 and Pete and Jay hosted the 2006 968 Celebration in Newtown, Pa. Both of these events used different formats which were successful. Trying to diss someone anonymously always seems to diss others.

As in 2005 and 2006, I enjoy seeing different formats for the 968 Celebrations and look forward to seeing this year's changes. In my mind, whether it be a Get Together, Gathering or Celebration, the main thing is to give the owners a chance to meet, look at each other's cars and enjoy the camraderie.

I look forward to seeing all of you 968 owners and your cars, both new and old, on Friday afternoon in the Hotel Parking Lot, at the Swap Meet and at the Saturday Dinner.

i don't think anybody is trying to "diss" anybody else - i think the point is that this format looks to be the best yet - i haven't been to them all, but i have been to 3, and seen 2 formats so far, and i think this one will by far be the best - it is looser and less regimented, with the dinner on saturday where it belongs, rather than trying to cram a mini-concours AND travel, AND the dinner all into one evening - the mini-concours being extended over 2 days also gives more people more time to see all the cars - the all important fun-run is a necessary component too - that is what these cars were made for after all

i don't think anybody really cares who is running the thing, as long as the features are there and everybody has a good time

i do think the committee process is far more successful at achieving those goals, as long as they are actually allowed to do their job without interference

knowing how the ridiculous up-tight politics of this has all gone this year, i cannot stress enough how much credit these people deserve

Great to know that the ongoing comments about this year's event being much better, casual, fun, etc is not an attempt to diss any of the previous 9 years of events in Hershey, Reston and Newtown or their organzers.

Reason that I, and the Central Pa Region Swap Meet organizers, intervened was explained in a previous post which has been deleted. You will have to check one of the 968 websites to find out why.

Bottom line, a mistake was made which has been corrected and the event looks to be the 10th successful 968 Celebration - see you there!

nobody really ever cares who specifically organizes the event - it is the specific activities that most people pay attention to - as a professional event producer, of events far larger than this, i can tell you that the only thing that concerns people is how easy it is to attend, and that they have a full and complete experience that justifies their expenditure of time and resource

as for any misunderstanding, i think everyone was clear on all of this except one person - as i understand it, all was taken care of, and all agreed upon - then outside intervention and meddling occurred - the only mistake was in anybody else getting involved that had no business sticking their nose into it - it was all already done - it had nothing whatsoever to do with money (an offer was even made by one person to pay for the whole thing just to make the problem go away, and if they hadn't, i would have too) - it had nothing to do with parking location either, because nobody really cared, as long as the cars were together - as far as i know, nobody is interested in the concours, parking in it, or anything related to it, but all were prepared to pay for it if that is what needed to happen to put the cars together nearer the event

basically this event is only using the swap meet as a central anchor event - in a couple of other years it was not even a part of it - this year it is but one part of the total event, and frankly has become the most complicated part - i find it unfathomable that something as simple as arranging parking has resulted in such insanity - if i ran any of my concert parking like that, i'd have the police everywhere arresting people for fighting, and i'd get shut down - this could have been a lot simpler if things had been left alone - the committee had this all worked out long ago

all that aside though, and in spite of the hiccups, this is shaping up to be the best one of these yet, and definitely the benchmark for the future

Nice summary of how you see things. It would have really been a generous offer, on your part, to pay for everyone's gate fee and concours fee. This would have been a definite first.

i would have been the second person to make that offer - somebody already beat me to it, but it got worked out and they didn't have to do it - it would have been a no brainer though
