just an update - we are making some headway on this - it is confirmed that there is nothing we can do with this version, but there are some changes in the new version that will help things - we still have a couple of bugs to work out though

i never understood what everyone was talking about, because i have never hit the reply button on an individual post - i have always hit the reply button at the bottom of the page - i always merely addressed the individual if i felt i needed a distinction from the last post - i now understand the issue better, and do see where it could be helpful in some fashion, and am trying to work out a solution that won't bog down the system, yet still provide this function

I, too have seen the quote error a few times. I came here looking for an answer why. I assumed Mac/Safari/Firefox issues.

My argument for quotes is sometimes I want to refer to a specific point brought up in a reply, not the OP. Like this:
http://www.968forums...&...ost&p=85910
My reply addresses a specific point in a reply, but may not make a lot of sense WRT the OP. (Hell, it may not make any sense anyway, who knows? biggrin.gif ) I've learned to be judicial with quotes, on another forum I frequent people often quote an entire post, including multiple pictures, only to say "Nice pics." It drives me nuts. mad.gif

Bottom line, I think proper quoting make points, especially in tech/R&R forums, more concise.

you can always quote a section with "cut and paste" and address the reply to the person - like this:

"Bottom line, I think proper quoting make points, especially in tech/R&R forums, more concise."

dlearl476 - i completely agree - now as soon as somebody figures out how to have proper quoting and not abuse, we're in business

lol - i just haven't had a stretch of days that i can dedicate to managing the software upgrade - i see a stretch coming up though

reactivating the quote feature will require a modification to the new software, so as to limit the number of characters in a quote, and eliminate images from being quoted, which will prevent the search engine from being bogged down again, and also keep the posts clean so we don't have anymore long quoted posts with a lame response like "cool"

we do want to enable quoting so as to facilitate referencing, but not so that it allows the abuse and problems we saw before

You have been a busy bee of late and considering the list of projects and events, I can see how the "quote" thing made its way to the back burner.

Perhaps you can pass this over to Jay, he'll be glad to help tongue.gif

it's a pretty involved process getting the site upgrades in place - it will take about 3 full days of manipulating things - i'll get to it soon - i just need to wrap up a few things this week - next week looks pretty good

yup - that's a problem - limiting the number of characters will be important too, so that enough can be quoted so the reference makes sense, but no so much that it gets dumb - a modification to the code will have to be written for that, which means employing an outside vendor

I hope the new sw is not set up like .net. That app uses nested quotes. Like having 4 conversations going at one time. Very irritating.

The inability to quote isn't a big deal to me - like Flash says, you can achieve the same results using different means. What I find more vexing is that, unless I'm missing something, the only way to reply to a PM is through a quoted response. But when you do that, you get the infamous "quote error message." Kind of like being in a Dilbert cartoon ohmy.gif biggrin.gif . Is there a way to reply to a PM that doesn't involve quoting? Thanks.

Cloud, just delete the quote when replying. I'd like to get the quote feature back. Typically, if i'm responding to someone...i will only quote what i'm responding to, not their whole post.

i don't know why the pm defaults to quoting - i can't find a way to turn that off

as soon as we have a mod written to limit the quotes in posts to something reasonable (100 characters or something) we'll turn that back on
