Like many of us I cruise the "View New Posts" link almost daily. Since many topics have mulitple posts and multiple pages, or if I reply, then the browser's back button is usually mutiple clicks away from the New Posts page. As such I scroll back up to the top and hit "View New Posts".

Not that this is any real strain on my right index finger, but in my never ending quest to suggest small, incremental improvements to UI, I offer the following suggestion(s).

1. Replicate the "Logged in as: " bar on the bottom of the page
2. Put the "Logged in as " bar on the side of the page
3. Add a link to "View New Posts" on the bottom of the page

Respectfully,

Don't know a lick about programming but have loads of UI suggestions Joe

I'm with you Joe. I was thinking the same thing about the "view new posts" at the bottom of the page just yesterday. Okay, so I'm lazy... still a great suggestion!

lol - you guys really are lazy - you should try poking around in areas you haven't seen yet - there are literally thousands of threads you haven't read yet - many threads are being merged so as to condense and distill information, and prevent repetitive threads - a lot more sifting is going to be done, as i group similar threads together in sections of their own - "new" will be a relative term in the future

anyway, many things are not possible in this version - template issues - there are many limitations to this software - i can only move around and change so many things

on a side note, as an example of the problem, even this thread was put in the wrong spot - it has now been moved to its correct location

Flash, I appreciate everything you do with this site... freaking awesome!!! It must be like a second (or third? or fourth?) job for you. I can't imagine the hours it must take to keep up with all this stuff. Bravo (hands clapping loudly!!!), thanks for your labor! And to the rest of you who have this crazy amount of experience and knowledge, I've learned soooooooooooo much from these threads and saved so much time and money on my addiction, er... car, that I feel obligated to offer up some sort of grattitude or something...

So, here goes...

I'm in Germany until July '09 for sure, so, if any 968ers are going to be visiting Germany or in the vicinity of Bavaria, PM me a couple of days in advance. I will provide all the *preferred local beverage choice* and Texas BBQ you can eat at no cost so long as you show up with a hearty appetite, a friendly smile and ready to talk Porsche.

My contribution to the friendship and comraderie amongst the marque.

Again, thanks Flash for all you do to keep this forum going. Press on brother! :D

Make life easy. here is how....

download justURL's program from: http://easterndigitalsoftware.com/ freeware

Program the 'GO' box with :

http://www.968forums...amp;CODE=getnew

call it '968 new posts'

without even having to manually open your browser or type in your site user and password, and without having to click trhough two screens to get the most recent posts....

you are one click away after the power button!!!

and when you first load the program, make it for your use only. this way it does not get all junked up with other people's Url's

i'll have to look at that - there are a lot of things to consider - entry protocol is one big one - i can't let access to non-members - WAY too much spam - if that bypasses access requirements, it would be a no-go

Really, it's for web users as a shortcut. no, it does not bypass your security. It just programs the URL into a screen button (with the logon name and password included automatically)

Kinda like 'favorites' but can go further into website choices and it is faster to use.

hmmm - i'll have to look into browser compatibility issues and such - that was a royal pain when going through this stuff too - a few of the things i wanted to do won't work on some browsers

not sure such a button is all that good of an idea though - but that's a different philosophical discussion for another time

the goal is to encourage more reading of otherwise less travelled areas, not less - there is a tendency to treat this like a chat board, and it's really more of a library

but, we do have a chat room here - too

on that subject, it got some action when it first went up, but then it died - i am working on a different chat setup that doesn't bounce you to a new window, and instead generates a pop-up - i think that was a large part of the problem

Pop-up chat would be cool.

My only real frustration with the interface (since we are throwing wet sponges at Bob today :D ) is when I view new posts. If I have not visited in a day or so, the list can get rather long. I rarely have time to wander through all of them before I get distracted (i.e., get back to work). As a result the rest of the new posts are then buried in their many little topics, never to been seen again unless they get a reply, and I see it before leaving, again.

Whew! Did that make sense? Perhaps there is a tool I am missing (probable actually). But with so many topics I just cannot even begin to find something I did not really see to begin with... see?

All of this does not diminish the value of the forum or the hard work Bob does. In fact, you are a victim of your own willingness to tinker. If you had just said last spring, "that's it, no more changes" the forum would be fine and I would not be whining now...

and now back to work!

I'm disappointed that chat hasn't taken off. I was a big proponent for that feature and we used it for the first few days, and then it fell silent.

The only way to tell is someone is in there is on the welcome (index) page...maybe we should have a scheduled evening chat (say 10:00 PM Eastern) and see if this feature can gain some traction.

Just thinking out loud,

Jay

How about a small flashing button on all pages if chat is active?

yes, the list of new posts can get long if you let it go for a day - with an average of 60 posts per day, IF you manage to actually get them all to show up when you hit the button (which does not happen), you could be overwhelmed

i am looking into the chat issues right now - i'll get back to everyone when i get it sorted out

as for the mod to the board for the "view new posts" issue - rather than us spend a bunch of time and money creating something that already exists, why don't you just hit the "home" button on your keyboard? (not the "home" button on the website which would take you to the home page) - the button on your keyboard will take you right back to the top of the page you are on, and give you access to the "view new posts" button

Flash, regarding the shortcut: you don;t have to actually do anything. Only the end user would do this if they wanted a shortcut. It's a windows based program and is free and works with any browser.

consider it the "EASY BUTTON" to get youself to 968forums!!
