correct - i was referring to the front spoiler - that is a tech art, and not the porsche motorsport spoiler - i've only seen a couple of those - pretty rare beast - i had one here for a bit, mistakingly ordering it thinking it was the motorsport unit - in hindsight, i might have been better off with that unit, as the motorsport one caused me nothing but problems

Standard Maintenance items you should be aware of;

DME Relay (About $27, you should keep a spare in the glove compartment)

Heater Control Valve
Caster Blocks
Missing Clutch Inspection Port Plug
Passenger Side Power Steering Hose leak

If you don't know the last time belts were done, it is good insurance to have it done. While you're in there, balance shaft seals tend to leak.

Take it for a good long drive, make sure that fans go on and temp gauge stays in the 8:00 O'Clock position.

I'm sure you'll find lots more hints by reading through the threads, don't hesitate to ask questions.

Great thread on the do's/don'ts. I appreciate all the help here. I have been a big reader of ppbb.com, which is for Boxsters and has some great content with a lot of helpful people with solid advice and opinions. I'm glad to see that this site seems to be very similar. It makes me more excited to get the 968 and start my experience!

That becker looks like a nice match for the 968. Does the NAV function as good as it looks?

The nav works quite well, but you only have small display on the right and you can not see a map. But it is very clear with it's instructions. You also get it with a full color display but that costs a little more.

I just firmed up the deal today. I have to travel a little bit but I'm picking it up within the next 3 weeks. I'm thinking of leaving the "S" and telling everyone it stands for "Super Fast!" I'm sure it HAS to be good for about 12 hp, no? I'm sure it makes the car feel good to think it is an S...

Anyone know a place in the SF East Bay to get a Venture clear bra installed? I would like to do that as soon as I pick it up.

Sold the Boxster today and locked in the 968. Picking it up within the next 2 weeks. I'm stoked! First thing I'm doing before driving back from the Bay Area is to take it to the indie that performed the PPI and get the oil changed, timing belt and balance shaft seals changed. Other than that, I think I'm good to go. The rest I can do on my own. Looking forward to climbing under the front hood again with the pull of a lever and not spend 3-4 minutes getting to the engine...

One question I have is on the engine cover. I see a lot of pics of engines that have the cover on the front surrounding the engine. Mine does not. I'm assuming that it had one but is gone. Is it good to have? not have? Is this something I should think about getting or is simply aesthetics?

The covers were standard on earlier cars and deleted later as they ran out of parts. Many of us have added them, mostly for aesthestics (though there may be some marginal improvement if you add it with the "Air Box Mod")

Well, I'm all set for the Sunday night pick up. I sold the Boxster much faster than I anticipated and now I'm Porsche-less for the first time in a few years. Feels weird. I'm really pumped about picking up the 968 this weekend. I'm going to take it immediately to the local indie who did the PPI and have the timing belt, balance shaft belt, rollers & tensioner changed out just to make myself feel better. I think the last time this was done was 1999 (only 5k ago). I'm also going to have the oil changed before I head back to SoCal from the Bay Area. Other than those two things, any other stuff I need to look at right off the bat with the indie? I need to read through the archives a bit more to get some more ideas. Since the car has only 35k on it, there isn't a lot that is worn out from the running of the car. It looks perfect. I'm planning on taking the whole day and driving back home down the coast and just enjoying the sunshine, the coast and the car...

Congrats, and enjoy. I think you'll find the 968 carries with it one piece of standard equipment that is never listed on the spec sheets - the SMILE FACTOR! You'll see...

If you don't have a record of the water pump being changed recently, you might as well change that while the TB job is being done. Also if they are opening up the cooiling system have them pop a new heater control valve in.

Sorry, one last question.

I am heading to the shop with my '95 968 on Monday. It has 35k miles on it. Here is what I'm looking at getting done for my own piece of mind. Please let me know if there is anything else I should have done since I'm in this far... I did a PPI and there were a couple of minor things like the motor mounts and a possible seepage from the power steering hose. I'm going to take care of that stuff either on my own or at a later time. I'm more concerned with the major stuff that could turn out to be horrible if not done.

Timing belt/Balance shaft belt, tensioner and rollers (kit)
cap & rotor
oil change
Since they are changing out the timing belt, I might have them change the water pump

I also picked up a spare DME (993 style?) & Heater Control Valve to keep around

Anything else I should have them change? I do want to do some work on my own (I'm pretty good with a wrench) but the timing belt, etc. takes too much time for me to finish (small kids)...

I'm getting restless & won't be able to sleep Saturday night!

flush and bleed all hydraulics, and carefully check the high pressure hose on the clutch for any signs of swelling

I'd also give the 13-year-old brake lines a good inspection - or simply bite the safety bullet and replace them.

Thanks y'all. I'm planning on going through quite a bit of the car myself when I get it home. During the PPI they checked the brake lines, hoses and belts and all looked okay. I'm actually picking it up a day earlier now (tomorrow)! Going to be a rough night of sleep. I'm going to pull up the pictures again...

Balance shaft seals are known to leak. Since you right there it's a no brainer.
