I thought the 928 was the car that was intended to replace the 911 not the 968.

they never really intended to replace the 911.  they were trying to find a car that the americans would buy, and americans love front/rear drive engine cars, particularly if they have a V8.

 

not sure i would call the 928 a sedan either.  it was a GT, much like the 968 and 944 before it, albeit a much more civilized version.

technically, that may be correct, but related to the US market.  that was the motivation.  they saw the market and thought it would play.  it didn't, which is why they abandoned it until the panamera again opened the door for a front engine car.  interestingly, it took the cayenne to break the mold and open the door for front engine porsches again, which is something porsche never really considered, until the VW flip around happened.
