According to my source, Straight Line SF to Tijuana is about 475 miles, SF to Brookings, OR is 313. However, the straight line from Brookings to TJ doesn't go through SF. The midway between those two cities would be around Stockton - that distance swung over to the coast (385ish miles from Brookings) would be around San Jose. So, yeah, barely in the North.
But I think we all can agree the Northern v. Southern CA thing is more a mindset than a location. (I'm 20 years removed from Santa Monica myself).

However, you do realize there is no such thing as " straight line " FROM Tijuana to anywhere ; when you leave TJ you can't walk or drive in a straight line no matter how much you might think you can.. anyplace where you can buy 20 rounds of tequila for about $ 5 will tend to have that effect, lol.

San Francisco is technically in Southern California? Bite your tongue!!! Not even close, it is fewer miles to the Oregon border than to the Mexican Border.

I wish I had the time to devote to this esoteric musing. Is this part of being what Californian is all about? How about Midcal? Or tweencal? Or halfcal? Or Bical? Just some thoughts this glorious Memorial day. Don't forget the troops and those overseas who make this all possible!

However, I have always believed San Jose to be the northernmost suburb of Los Angeles. lol

Hey Rap,
There have been more than a few proposals to split California in two. Especially, when southern California politicians want to divert more water from northern California rivers to feed LA. Not that it would ever actually happen, but every once in a while somebody will raise the issue.
As for Memorial Day, always a tough day for me. I went out to Golden Gate National Cemetery and spent some time remembering absent comrades. Too long a time has passed between visits to the Viet Nam Memorial in Washington. I hope to make it out there for Veterans Day this year.
