Almost there!
#1

To celebrate the completion of a project at work (and to take a break), I decided to go out and zoom around in my car on the freeways here. Took it all the way to hope, and surprisingly there weren't THAT many cars on the road. I only saw one highway cop, and he had already pulled someone over hehe. The highway between abbotsford and hope is a very nice drive, bends, hills, and straight sections The best past is that even if there is a cop on the other side that sees you, there isn't much they can do unless they cut though the large grassy ditch seperating the trafic flow.

Anyways, took the car up to about 150 - 180kph though out most of that section, and I think that's where the car feels the most comfortable. Any faster and it feels like you're concentrating more on other things rather than enjoying the corners. Maybe it's just my inexperience

A quick pitstop at hope, and then it was time to head back, using the #7 highway of course. That highway is very empty (surprisingly, maybe it's just the weekend), so I decided to take the car up higher. Saddly today there was a nasty wind blowing east, at least 30kph, but I still managed to take it up to 210. Just 40kph or so to go and I would have basically reached top speed And the only two gears I have left to top out are 5th and 6th. I just didn't feel up to taking the car higher as the buffeting from the wind (plus head wind) was kind of nerve racking.

The nice thing about the #7 is that they're working on fixing it up, laying down a fresh layer of ashphalt. On the way home, same cop had someone else pulled over, got home and cleaned my car from all the buggy death that had accumulated on my bumper.

One of these days I will capture a top speed run on video

all speedos are a tad optimistic, but when my car was stock, i've been slightly north of 160MPH on 3 diff occasions.

yup - ours are off by about 5 when they get up that high - top speed in stock trim is a true 156mph

Well, whatever the speed, 200kph + is fast! I'll be playing around with trying to jury-rig a tri-pod/camera setup into position this week. I don't feel like spending money on a commercial camera mounting system if I don't have to

I would really like to get my track car out on the open road and see what she has in her. With longer gearing (951 tranny), better aerodynamics, and 700 lbs less weight, I'm guessing she'd fly

Make sure you post the video afterwards. I'm always interested in seeing how other people drive their 968!

ren - it's about 124mph - fast and fun, and very solid in this car

lemming - i would really love to see how that drives myself - that has just GOT to be fun

it really all depends on many factors, from car to car, some perform as they should, others make less power then they should, while some are factory freaks. alt. & temp also play a big role.

agreed

tire diameters toss things out too - worn tires wil make the speedo read high by 2-3 at top speed all by themselves

top speed tests i've seen were at sea level, and all published ones concurred

higher altitudes would reduce top speed, even though the air restriction would be less

perhaps with really cold temps, you could eek out another mph or 2, but the geometrically increasing power needs for increased speed would likely outweigh any such benefits

even given the 1% variance that may have occurred from car to car, and even if the tested cars were at the bottom of the scale, top speed on a stock car with normal temps at sea level would only be 157 instead of 156

based on recent tests, i'm pushing 280+ and i only have an extra few mph over the stock top speed i myself tested, which concurred with published tests

it takes a lot of power increase to increase top speed

and the speedo still reads high by about 5 at that level, so without a radar gun or a gps, it's pretty hard to tell

i will be doing a high speed run when i am done to find out just how fast it can go - i'm guesing i'll tick just about 160

I have done it! I have created a (not too exciting) in car video Basically I stuck a tripod in the passanger's seat, and put the seatbelt around it. It works too! Just goes to show that you don't need to spend a lot of money on fancy camera equipment to get what you want. Granted fancy equipment might provide better results when it comes to extreme performance. A few things I have learned thus far:

1) The car doesn't sound as good on camera

2) The whole setup could use more padding and support (for fast corners)

3) I HATE sony software! GAH! 320x240 is the best this over simplified garbage could give me??

Porsche 968 test vid, Divx 6.22 codec, 32.2 MB

The ratteling you hear in the right speaker is the tripod rubbing against leather.

The rattling you sometimes hear in the left speaker is my shifter knob in 4th (usually). I really need a new one

The top speed reached in the video is about 110mph

Next up, top speed! or DE, whichever comes first

I only got the audio, no video. It came thru using M/S Windows Media Player.

Hmmm, I made an mpeg version too. Seems like Divx is hit and miss at times

Mpeg version

I will play around with different tripod positions and try to get it to focus on the instrument panel as well. Maybe from the back seat.
