YEAR BY YEAR DIFFERENCES
#21

Many thanks, Flash, got to go and have a look at my 93's format now. I certainly have a transparent PS reservoir top but am more interested in finding out which variant of DME, chip, castor block and con rods are fitted.

Both my '93 model year cars (one early, one late) have transparent power steering reservoirs.

There’s a little change I’m missing in the list. The ’92 model year cars (without the audio option) have the old speaker trim in the rear (same as 944s). As of model year ’93 this has been changed to the much better looking metal grill type.

can you be more specific about the audio trim? we never got the clubsports, so the list is specific to the US cars

Flash,

Don't forget that the lower strut brace will fit fine on the 92 if you mount it on the front of the Caster Blocks instead of the rear where it hits the exhaust.

i think that is just your car - the 92 that just left here has the brace in the correct spot

Yes, this has nothing todo with the CS versions (as these were only available as of the '93 model year). I think the English term is rear quarter panel. For the '92 model year cars (without the M490 option) the old panel of the 944 is used which looks like;

As of the '93 model year the updated version, previously only available for option code M490 equipped cars, became standard. This one looks like;

interesting - i don't think i've ever seen them yet - as far as i know, they all came with the same rear panel - i guess maybe somebody has a stereo delete US spec car, but i have yet to come across on - this is the only thing i have seen here:

My '94 also had the cover shown on the second picture. Maybe it is a ROW thing?

Data point:

My car is an early '92 (recessed hood badge).

It has the black speaker grill trim as shown in the second picture.

My car had the 10 speaker option.

yeah - thinking back, i have a vague memory of having seen the small black grille, but i can't remember if it was on a 944 or a 968 - might have been a 10 speaker thing - i think i'm getting old and losing it - good thing i have this site to look back at and clear those kinds of things up

anybody else got a shot of their US spec 968 with the grille? was it only a 92 thing?

my car is a U.S. spec 1995 (718 Re Vin) and has the black covers shown in the second picture. I have the a basic factory audio system. So there is more to this, it isnt exclusive to certain years or certain audio packages.

i can take a picture or two this evening if you'd like.

Yes to make it clear, my observation is that only '92 model year cars without the audio option (M490) have the old style 944 quarter panels. All others have the one with the grill no matter if the audio option was fitted or not. I've parted out two '92 model year cars, one early (recessed hood badge) and one late, both were equipped with the 944 style panels.

No one here with an ’92 model year US spec car without the audio option?

Found it! According to my Database two of the cars currently auctioned on Ebay don't have the Audio option. Unfortunately, the pictures are not that clear...

US cars came standard with a 6 speaker stereo - you could opt for more, or opt for delete

they did not have a rear speaker deletion if they had the front speakers, which both of those clearly do - they would have at least the standard 6 speaker setup with a 6.5" driver on each rear

can't see the panel in either car to see what it looks like

That's exactly the same for RoW cars. They all came with 6 speakers standard (4 in the doors, 2 behind the rear panels). All '92 cars with 6 speakers have the old style panels.

well, you were saying "without the audio option", option being the key word, which to me said, "without stereo", and since they all had a stereo (except for those that specifically had a stereo delete), i assumed you meant that the cars came with no stereo standard, and had to have a stereo option, which they did not - rather, you had to have an option to change the standard stereo one way or the other

since they made a whole lot more 92s over there than they did here (2500 hardtops vs 700 and 1300 cabs vs 700), and released the car a number of months earlier over there, i wouldn't be surprised that they used up the 944 stuff on those cars first

from everything i can find, it just wasn't what they did here

as for listing this particular change, as this list is specific to US spec cars (purely because there is no way for me to determine all of the other things for ROW cars), unless i can find it to be a change in US cars, i'm inclined to leave it off of this list

of course i can start a list for ROW cars, and that would be very cool
