968/951 near da burgh
#1

im having trouble finding much of a selection within a reasonable distance of pittsburgh, and 968's are pretty much non existant it seems. who knows though, maybe im just not looking hard enough. Id really prefer a 968 but I like 944's alot too so thats not such a huge deal, basically i want a car in excellent condition, I work 70-90 hours a week and dont have time to work on a car, I just want to turn the key and not have to worry, plus Im trying to pay off college asap(I know, buying a porsche might not be the smartest financial decision) so I really dont want to have to spend much extra after I buy it, i figure itll sting less then. so far Ive only found one potential car, a silver rose 944 in sewickely, and another 89 turbo Ill be going to look at sometime this month, its in paint right now which makes me nervous especially due to the lack of pre paint photos. but ya no 968's it seems, oh ya Im not a big soft top guy...they slow cars down and I want em to go faster haha

The best 968 you could probably buy right now is in PA. http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=9083

Agreed. Pete is very thorough and stands behind his work. There are cheaper 968s out there but you get what you pay for. Chances are your going to run it past RSBarn after you buy one either way. I know I would.

GL w/ your search.

You can't reply to classified ad's, it keeps it cleaner. Pete probably figured he reached a level high enough of fame that he didn't need to leave any contact info..

Here is an interesting 944 Turbo S (yes, it isn't a 968 but probably is a good comp).

1989 Porsche 944 Turbo S, $10,000
- Nice color combo.
- I've seen many Turbo S with asking price in the $15 and up range.
- the ad speaks highly of good maintenance, but the miles are high on this one.
- not near da burgh, but could be shipped for $1000 or so.

But in my opinion, when I look at the pics, I don't get that excitement I can get when I look at 968s. The design differences just make the 944 look dated and common.

thanks guys, got an email out and i guess well see what happens.
968syncro, ya I know what you mean, and I like the styling of the 968s better too, but I dont know, Ive always liked 944s alot too. its funny the add u sent is from CA, it seems like every 944 or968 I see that I like is from somewhere on the west coast, the problem is getting off work to go look at it, its hard to justify flying across the country to look at a car I might not even buy, not ruling it out, but Id like to exhaust all of my options close to home first

I know this is a little of topic but.....why does the 951 have different door cards than usual? I have never seen speaker grills like those.

Those are the original 10 speaker door panels.
I think they were optional on '88 944's and later.

AlecO,

IMHO, that Turbo S will be WAY more work (and $$$) to maintain than a good 968. Anybody can stop me from saying that if I am off target, but I think not. I have to say, when I look at the 944, especially the back end, it now looks really dated, what's the line, "...you're so 2000 late..."

One reason I got involved in 968's is extreme cost of 951 Service
We work on 951's and they are very difficult to work on.
I also believe the 968 is just a superior street car with better powerband and 6 speed

Having had both, the 968 is far more reliable, easier to work on and (IMHO) better drive daily.
More useable power and a much better shifting gearbox.

really? I never realized 951s were so much more expensive to work on, I actually figured since they are more common theyd be a little cheaper, def glad to know that

That's a pretty good deal for a 89 Turbo S. I wish I had the $$$ to jump on it myself. Nice find Syncro!
