Wolfbbg says hello!
#1

Greetings from Northeast TN! (Kingsport, to be exact) I currently do not own a 968, however I am in the midst of heavy researching about this model. I'm trying to decide if this would be an appropriate car for a daily driver. It would appear that they are supposed to be fairly reliable, but I'm trying to get a handle on estimated upkeep costs. Sorry, I'm a detail-oriented engineer...

I'm also wondering how long my kids (currently 8 & 5) will fit in the back "seats"? Plus, any suggestions on how I can convince my wife this isn't a mid-life crisis?

Thanks!

Greetings,

A lot of folks still use their 968's as daily drivers. Upkeep is reasonable (for a Porsche) and a lot of part transfer from 944's. Maintenance is an absolute must, but otherwise these cars prove reliable.

I wouldn't reccomend this car's back seat for a cross country trip.

There is no way to convince your wife that this isn't a mid-life crisis car...oh wait, it's a "hatchback"...very practical for groceries

Heya, welcome to the board.

These are great cars and many ppl use them as DD's. They are pretty solid runners as long as you do proper up keep. The big ticket items are clutch & vario cam service. make sure you get a ppi done. I change my belts every 20K or so, but they can go for a lot longer. When shopping for parts, there are several sources to check to get the best deal. Paragonproducts, automotion, sunset porsche, performance products, etc.

Outside of cool color combos, the most coveted options are M030 Package, LSD, & Sport seats. If you are buying a coupe, i'd try and find a car with LSD. Sport seats are nice, but for a daily driver they would not make or break a deal for me. I also would not purchase an M030 car (i know most people would). But M030 is not a forgiving suspension. So if you are buying the car to DD, the standard suspension is much more compliant and doesnt bounce around/wander on uneven surfaces/over bumps nearly as much. As far as modifying the car, again i wouldnt pick up an M030 car as i would be swapping the suspension anyway. Paying a premium for an M030 equiped car is not worth it imo, unless of course you plan to track the car in stock class.

lastly, if your wife does not give you the ok. A more practical alternative to the 968 would be a 1995-1999 E36 M3. They offer very similiar performance and clean cars can be found in a similiar price range. They were also available as a Coupe, Sedan, or Convertible.

Welcome!

I'll throw in my 2 cents as someone who has used his 968 as a DD for the last 16 years.
I love the car, and with the hatch back it is actually very practical.

8 and 5 year olds might fit in the back seats, though adult humans do not (other than a very short trip, or in an emergency).

Maintenance cost can be prohibitively high if you don't have the right mechanic.
I was getting abused by the local P dealer who charged $125/hr but wasn't familiar with this old model. Inflated hours, a high labor rate, and unnecessary part swaps make for a VERY bad combination. Not to mention the inflated P dealer parts cost.

With the right mechanic who will allow you to bring your own parts, or a good lower cost source for parts, and the ability to do some basic stuff yourself you can keep the cost reasonable.

If you are lucky enough to have the right shop near you, the 968 will make you happy

Good luck,
Jamie

If you can do your own work on the car, that can be a lot of fun and save a lot of $$. Just about anything on the car can be done in your very own garage given the right tools (and all the "dtail-oriented engineers" I know love tools). The DIY section of this forum would even show those high dollar Porsche dealer mechanics a thing or two.
