wipers kaput
#1

hey guys, having trouble with my wipers.

I generally just nudge the stalk slightly to trigger a sweep of the wipers when I need it. Well, a couple times previously, the wipers would move about 3 inches and then stop, then become unresponsive. In the past they came back in a few seconds.

Well tonight in the rain, they were working ok, then at some point I nudged the stalk, they moved 3 in and then stopped, and they haven't come back.

- fuse is ok

- looked at a relay for the 'intermittent' motor, relay G9, re-seated said relay - no luck

- restarting the car a number of times, + letting it set 2 mins or so, didn't work

- no other obvious electrical problems (my cruise control is out, but this has been an issue for a little while now)

any thoughts? I am wondering if there's a problem in the stalk or steering column electricals. ???

barring other suggestions, I am going to order another G9 relay and see where that gets me.

Have you checked the power at the wiper motor? could be the motor crapped out. (just a thought)

also you might check the connections at the delay switch, when I got my car

the wipers didn't work turned out to be the wiper delay. Well pretty sure!

It was the last thing I checked before I got them to work.

GOOD LUCK

The intermittent setting on my wipers has not worrked since I've had the car (4 years). I use the "manual mode". So, where is the delay switch? I thought the problem was in the steering stalk and didn't want to take it all apart.

well I tugged on the wipers with the stalk turned on, and they magically reawakened. . . good fortune I guess.

Cosimo - you might try replacing the relay in location G9 in the fusebox. . . it controls the intermittent setting I believe.

Doster you're talking about connections at the delay thumbwheel just to the R of the steering column, yes?

Ether_Joe,

The intermittant position on my 944 does the same thing, but the low and high speed positions work OK. My guess/thoughts would be a dirty switch on the column or dirty contacts on the delay switch. Have you tried running the delay control back and forth rapidly to "clean" it? Cleaning the column switch would be realtively easy, but you'd have to pull the wheel to get to it. I'm contemplating just replacing the whole steering column switch assembly as one of the turn signals doesn't auto-off either. Good thing is the 944 doesn't have an air bag like the 968, so it should be a little easier to disassemble. I think you're on the right track with the relay, but my money's on good old fashioned dirt somewhere. Good luck, let us know what the final fix is...

It's not hard to get at and replace the multi-switch on the steering column but you absolutely must disconnect the battery ground for at least one hour before removing the airbag. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting the airbag light, which can only be turned off at a Porsche dealer for $50-100.

The first thing I would do with this problem is pop out all relays and fuses associated with the wipers and shove them back into their sockets. Then pop any connections apart and reset those connectors. This will make sure that there is good metal-to-metal contact in the circuit. Next, I would suspect the multi-switch on the steering column. Finally, I'd suspect the wiper motor. I assume this motor has brushes and they are getting worn out.

My wiper motor howls occasionally and I really need to get at it for some lubrication. Not looking forward to that!

I initially thought the cause of my bad wiper function was the ground connection - the big bolt below the wiper motor itself.

But ultimately it was the motor itself - lots of wiring in there - bizarre behaviour disappeared the moment I replaced the motor.

New motor kinda spendy - used not so bad.

Ya. but if you had the wipers on and the wipers came back to life I'd have to

think its your motor or the linkage is hanging up.

I lived in Santa Cruz for many years and know how the moisture there can mess with

connections ,use a little dialectric grease after cleaning connections

K that would make sense. I will put it on the PITA-things-I've-got-to-do list.

You know one of the reasons I got the car was to learn to work on BOATS. See I want to do some bluewater (open ocean) cruising down the road. So I have no doubt, some day in the future I'll find myself in a storm in the mid Atlantic, cleaning the connections on my generator for an emergency fix. . . and I"ll think back to this thread and my cranky Porsche wiper blades. So thanks in advance for saving my future self from drowning to death

That sort of thing would indicate problems with the brushes in the motor, I would start looking for a replacement unit or a way to get into the motor to clean/check the brushes
