And room for big brakes!

F1 tires seem to have a decent amount of sidewall...

Have a look at F1 brakes they are stacked together in a "can", but are only a small diameter.

Over here in our V8 series - they are limited to a 17 or 18" (cannot remember) tyre.

Whilst the brake rotor diameter is important - it is the swept area (pad contact area) and clamping force that are important. Heat soak can be improved through thicker discs. A multi-piece brake disc is a way of getting a large brake rotor without the weight penalty. Rotational weight is bad. Similarly, unsprung weight (the weight hanging off the car) is also important as this creates dynamic inertia that the suspension has to deal with (and in the case of trucks - causes road pavement damage).

So the suspension will more easily deal with changes to a light tyre/rim than a heavy one.

However, for road cars - the market (rather than pure engineering like F1) drives what is "popular" and therefore is made.

Interesting stuff. So for a track car, what is the best choice, generally speaking? To me, it sounds like 17" is in the sweet spot, because it's large enough to clear the largest brakes available for the 968, should, all things being equal, have less rotational mass than larger wheels, while still providing a relatively thin sidewall. But the big problem with 17" wheels is availability in the most desirable widths and offsets, so it's probably not a clear-cut choice. Are there wheels specifically designed for racing that are available in 17" in widths up to 10", with the offsets we need (I guess about 52 mm in the back)?

Check out typical weight differences between 17 and 19 inch tire and wheel sizes. It is substantial.

I did a quick search last night, and the selection of widths and offsets in 17" is down dramatically from what it was a few years ago. Sigh... a victim of the silly march toward ever-larger wheel diameters. Although you would think there would be a surviving "cottage industry" of 15 - 17" wheels for people who track and race all those Miata's, Civics, E36 BMWs, 944's, etc.

Although, why stop at 19"? Take a look at these 26" bad boys - wouldn't they be da bomb on any 968?

Wish I could figure out how to post an actual image, instead of a link to one. Does it require a specific piece of software? I tried "insert image," and it just inserted a link in my post.

You have to download the image to your computer, resize it and then attach the file to your post via the left button at the bottom of the screen.

I'm afraid all my SC's new oomph would go into turning 4 of those rims! Now if they only came in International Orange <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thanks; I figured something like that would work, but it seemed like an awful lot of trouble to go to. Here goes:

Any easy trick in Windows is to Right click and choose Email Picture. It will as you to resize at that point and them create the email. I then snatch the file (copy) from the email and paste it where I want it or save it for an upload and cancel the email.
