Baum and Mercier "Hampton" daily watch since 1997. Rebuilt last year. Just like my car. Cost more than the original item. Just like....

I would love to have a Rolex Submariner with date - almost bought a "real" one in Battery Park. Dude had an entire collection in a Samsonite briefcase.

I know I'll be subjected to flames after posting this, but I 'm not a fan of Rolexes ; mind you, not taking away anything from the materials, the workmanship, the movement, which are all superb, but I just find them too ostentatious ..sort of the Lamborghini of the watch world. Screams of " look at me , I have money , and I need attention ". Now, there are some subtle Rolex models which are an exception to that, but I'm talking about the typical big-ass all gold Rolex, ( and some with diamonds on top of it all ) on one's wrist that dwarfs everything else about them .

The buddy of mine who I buy watches from who sells watches ranging from $300 to $500000 once described Rolex's as really a common tier watch amoung the worlds great watches. I received a Tudor, division of Rolex from my parents for my college graduation back in 78. It was a regatta style they ran for that year. That watch is my fav amoung all the watches i have. At the risk of sounding like an arrogant ass ,which is not my intent, does anyone spend time thinking the nite before which watch with which clothes and with which shoes they are going to wear the nite before? Mind you some of the larger watches sometimes have difficulty with certain cuffs!

I admit to thinking about that the night before...

Scott thank you. I was beginning to think the world was a lonely place!! Lol next question for all of you with multiple watches, what do you store your watches in, if at all?

Actually, a correction ; if I am going to a special event ( including 968 gtg in Paso Robles ) I do think of what to wear / plan ahead the day or night before..

My automatic watches are stored in mechanical winder cases , a couple of special ones which were inherited or don't wear anymore but have no intention of letting them go are in the safety deposit box at the bank, a couple of others are in the home safe , and the handful of the regulars are simply in their own boxes in the closet or nightstand trays, etc,,

So you can't look at a bunch at on time? Perhaps that's what slows down my choosing process!!! Lol

I have a Seiko MOD watch and a Longine dress watch which I like. Don't understand the triangle bit sticking up from the glass though.

Here's a pic of the B&M Hampton:

Here's a pic of the buckle, which I really like because it lays flat and never catches on anything:

Thanks! I first put it on on 25 October 1997.

I had it rebuilt about 2 yrs ago, I think, and they not only replaced the movement with a new one, they replaced the crystal, and they also buffed out all of the dings and scratches. It looked brand new. This summer, I'll probably bring it over the Hamilton Jewelers in Princeton for another buffing job.

Love this thread, I have tons of pictures of my Porsche's on the Rolex forum because cars and watches are big topic on most watch forums. As are shoes, big fan there as well. So only seems appropriate to comment on Watches on a Porsche forum.......... Cant post pictures given I am a rookie and have the status of a flea.

In any case current watches:

Rolex Submariner and Datejust

Piaget Altiplano

Girard Perregaux for Ferrari

Heuer Classic Chronograph

Omega Geneve

Planned includes a Patek Phillippe Aquanaut

Kept in a hidden cupboard in the house.

Very nice selection! I keep putting off buying a safe to put mine in. Now when we are out of town I have to haul 4 display boxes around to hide. Royal pain!

to me the most interesting part about this topic is to realize that many of us have watches, shoes/ clothes, etc.. which exceed the value of our car ( the 968, anyway..) and yet , I would not lose sleep over losing any or even all of of those things, but the thought of losing the 968 is too disturbing to deal with.. I think I need therapy

Aw shucks, a fine offer that is, but a few drinks also helps me cope with this " issue " , so methinks I'll stay with that therapy for a while... Besides, just got back from driving the bejesus out of the 968 today, and already feel better :-)

OK, someone 'SPLAIN this to me ( and I have spoken to a few top watchmakers and watch service centers , none had any answers, just acknowledged the " mystery " ) ; the initial / original batteries which come with any given quartz watches, whether very expensive ones or run-o-the-mill ones, typically last 3 or 4 years. No replacement quartz battery subsequently will last half as long, in fact if you get 2 years out of them you should celebrate.. 1 to 1 1/2 years is the average lifeline of the battery. WTF ? Tell me this is not another deliberate ripoff to keep the battery companies and service centers going strong, just as is the case with car parts.. Sure, there I go again with my conspiracy theory, but come on there is so much evidence out there to support this, it's not even funny

Does you knee still hurt. How much does a watch battery cost? I ki know intellectuals like you spend all day thinking about these things but for the rest of us cars or even breasts are more interesting. Those of course are breast watches. Sorry this was too easy! Lol it is a Chinese conspiracy meant to destabilize our economy due to the overpurchase of expensive watch batteries. We need to go back to windup watches and a more simple life. You could start with a 20 year old 968.
