Wheel clubs a useful deterrent?
#1

This is probably a no brainer, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

The 968 has the steering wheel lock built in (which doesn't always catch), but is one of the those "clubs" also a good idea? I just moved into a slightly shadier part of town, and though I know no car is theft proof, perhaps just the visual reinforcement of that ugly yellow bar in the steering wheel is a little extra mental deterrent to discourage a would be thief from breaking in. Do other folks agree? Is this just a waste of resources?

Thanks for opinions and thoughts!

Of course it can't hurt, but I suspect pros, at least, don't have much interest in stealing a 968. Given the rarity, they stick out like the proverbial sore thumb. And there is much too small a market for parts. Car thieves prefer models that are common like Honda Civics and such. Of course none of this applies to the young & dumb teen looking for a joy ride.

with the current market value of our cars, thieves might break your window and steal the club, leaving the car alone

but seriouly folks.. I agree it can't hurt, even punks looking for just a joyride might be deterred because it's one more thing they have to deal with and probably not worth the extra hassle. IMO..

A decent thief would break that thing in no more than a few moments. Crappy anti-theft system. I've seen the wood stay in one peace but the metal 'claw' just break in half.

Buy one of those pedal locks. MUCH harder to crack open, and if you do, you probably ruïne the pedals. Not pleasant, but better than no more 968.

Haha, thanks for the responses guys. I agree the people I have to worry about breaking in are not professional car thieves but probably stupid teenagers more than anything. As a friend of mine said in college, "a plastic zip strip is virtually as good as any (breakable) lock due only to the extra effort involved."

I have no doubt that all the club things are easily broken, I think I need just a visual reminder of effort for noob joyriders. I'll pick one up and cart it around until I get one of those drooling ones Mark has.

Only a couple of months until my baby goes to sleep for the long Swedish winter anyway (knock on wood).

Instead of the PCA sticker on your window you could place a NRA sticker.. maybe the would-be thieves would consider the chances of your showing up right about the time of their break-in progress..just maybe..

THE MAIN PROBLEM OF ALL CLUBS IS THE FACT THAT IF YOU TAKE A SAW, CUT THE WHEEL AND SLIP THE CLUB OFF THE WHEEL. SO IT DOES NOT MUCH GOOD. I USE TO LIVE IN nyc WHICH WAS THE THEIVES HEAVON PLACE FOR STEALING A CAR. WRAPPING SQUARE LINK CHAINS AROUND THE PEDALS AND UP AROUND THE STEERING COLUME MAY JUST MAKE IT TO HARD FOR THEM TO STEAL IT. THEN THEY GO TO THE EASY TARGET.

If a thief really wants your car it's difficult to stop them but a club will slow him/her down. Plus it will give you some peace of mind.

NLA parts sticker, lmao - that's brilliantly funny . - Mr. Chairman, I now yield my NRA stricker in favor of the NLA sticker introduced by the fine gentleman from Belgium .

On the flip side though, the thief might be tempted to steal the car just because of the potential market for those NLA parts..

Posting separately here because this may be one of the best theft deterrent methods : remove the DME Relay and leave it in the trunk space somewhere. I know it's a minute or two " hassle " to remove and put back in but no one will ever start the car without it :-)

Just found out the thing that connects the steering column with the steering rack is NLA. Like we don't want to steer no more.

You really seem to find opportunities in every corner Dan... You would make a very successful thief!

Say, aren't you a lawyer? Lol

Nope. And why would you insult me like that ?! ( Just kidding all you lawyers out there, just kidding...). My function is heavily involved with the legal domain on a daily basis but mostly on the commercial side of law and my graduate degree does have a "business law" minor, so after 30 + years in the enterprise risk management arena I know just enough things to be dangerous, lol..but no, far from being an attorney ( requires way more reading than I have patience for )

As for the steering rack NLA component, are you referring to that rod that has connecting u-joints ?

Ah, ok. I'm very, very sorry to call you a lawyer. I guess I'm no longer a 'gentleman' then? Lol. I knew it was something law-ish though.

The partnr is 944.347.027.02. Mine's got quite a bit of play at both ends. When the steering rack is locked with the centering bolt you can still move the steering wheel a bit. Having the part rebuild seems to be not an every day thing?

It's unfortunate that 99% of lawyers give the other 1% a bad name.

You sure of that ratio? Or perhaps you are just referring to Canadian lawyers!
